About the Item
Beautifully painted in glowing, deep ruddy and brown tones, this sensitive portrait of a young man in Taxco was painted by Ralph Dwight Ayer in the 1930s, during a visit to Mexico's most renowned region for silver mining and artisanry. The youth is shown with a cloth headband and a traditional Mexican striped blanket draped over the chair behind him. Ayer was a teacher and painter in Massachusetts, and was not highly prolific. In our estimation, this painting was Ayer's finest work. It is oil on canvas, and signed in the lower righthand corner. Dimensions include frame; visible painting is 25 inches high by 22.5 inches wide.
