About the Item
Full of tenderness in a moment of rejection and shame, this major Art Deco painting, masterfully executed, depicts Jophiel expelling Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. The two nude figures are newly aware of their nakedness, and of course it is knowledge that has led to their departure from Paradise and their future of toil and vulnerability. The painter has shown the angel suffused with a lovely, pale yellow light and surrounded by dramatic, velvety clouds, and the figures are softly lit in a beautiful glow. The painting is not signed, but it is clearly by a German master working in the 1920s. The medium is oil on canvas.
