"Hawaiiana, " Extraordinary Art Deco Cubist Surreal Painting after Pearl Harbor
About the Item
Saturated with the brilliant hues of earth and sea, and filled with symbols and signs of Hawaii's spectacular landscape and rich history -- including an angry Hawaiian king with his traditional feathered headdress or "mahiole" -- this watercolor was painted in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor to register the artist's "interpretation of the Menace that Threatened Hawaii." The painter, Robert O. Bach, was a private in the armed forces and stationed at Bellows Field, one of the secondary targets of the Japanese during the attack. Bach, a native of San Francisco, exhibited a set of drawings depicting the attack at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and later exhibited this watercolor in 1942 in the Sixth Annual Watercolor Exhibition of the San Francisco Art Association, hosted by the San Francisco Museum of Art. This painting was also exhibited at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and was featured in a local newspaper with the title "Imaginative Abstraction." This painting is extremely well-documented with a series of labels and articles on the reverse. (Dimensions include matte and frame.)

Robert O. Bach, stationed at Bellows Field in Hawaii in 1942, captures an exotic fantasy world of coral, seashells, starfish, lobster and brightly-colored fish, all in a lovely world of green-blue water. Bach had studied at the California School of Fine Arts and exhibited at the Palace of the Legion of Honor.
