Large 19th Century Antique French Original Oil Portrait of Lady on Canvas

About the Item

A high quality, antique portrait. Very sought-after. This antique oil painting on stretched canvas has been sourced in France. It is not signed nor dated however the painting most likely dates from the late 19th century/very early 20th century (see explanation below). It could possibly have been painted by a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris at the turn of the century. This portrait has been painted on a large, quality, stretched canvas with wedges (see photos of the back of the painting). From the mark on the back (M.Chabod) we can see that the canvas came from artists' materials supplier Jean Michel Chabod (1829-1892) in Paris, an Italian immigrant. He had a store located at 20 rue Jacob in the 6th arrondissement, conveniently located only 200m from the École des Beaux-Arts. Within the circle of artists and art students, he was often referred to as "Père Chabod". He was appreciated for his quality art supplies, especially his colors, and the famous painter Cézanne was one of his loyal customers. Since the supply store at 20 rue Jacob existed between 1877 and 1913, we can date this portrait to approximately this period. This antique portrait features an unknown, older lady. Good proportions and good rendering of light/contrast confirm the talent of the artist. It is worth noticing the diffuse and soft manner with which her features have been painted: no sharp lines, just soft shades (see close-ups). This technique gives the subject a soft facial expression and a rather kind appearance. The painting is in fair antique condition. It has not been cleaned, I leave that decision up to the new owner. The canvas has been repaired in the past (see photo of back). The small repair (a tear in the canvas) is very well done and cannot be seen on the front unless you know it's there. The painting has no structural issues or instabilities. It shows minor signs of wear consistent with age, especially around the edges (see photos).
