Stunning still life of fruit by German artist Franz Priking. Painted primarily in shades of gold, deep green and black and housed in a beautiful frame that has gilded accents, this original work of art is a stunner. Signed and dated in the upper right hand corner "Pricking 1955". There is a label on the reverse side from World House Galleries on Madison Ave in NYC. The label states the artist is French (where he resided at the time this work was painted). Priking was born in Germany and was eleven years old when WWII broke out. It is said that the war influenced him and his art for the rest of his life. Immediately after the war he began to show an affinity for the Expressionist art that was banned by the Nazis. Priking was a student of Max Pechstein by 1948 at the Bauhaus, and by 1952 he had moved to southern France, meeting Picasso at Vallauris. Picasso is said to have strongly encouraged him, saying he would become one of the great artists of the century. He exhibited mostly in Europe but also in Tokyo and Sao Paolo. The artist's use of black (prominent in this work) is said to reflect the darkness of his early years during the war. His work moved through various phases, beginning with Fauvism and Cubism, moving through Expressionism and finally on to abstraction in his final decade. In 1958 he was awarded the Prix de la Jeune Peinture in Paris, in 1961 he was elected a member of the International Institute of Arts and Letters in Geneva. This beautiful boiserie panel depicting an allegory of Spring and the Arms of France was hand-painted in France, circa 1840. Boiserie is ornate wooden paneling that covered walls and ceilings of luxurious chateaus in France. The use of these panels became more prevalent at the end of the 17th century, before exploding in popularity during the 1700’s, thanks to multiple installations at the Palace of Versailles. Lengthy paintings such as this (ours is over 112 inches long) would often be placed above a doorway, forming a continuous theme with the rest of the room. The arrival of Spring is depicted by four winged cherubs frolicking among pink, white, and yellow flowers. None of the cherubs are clothed, although two of them are draped in colored textiles. The putto on the far left has a billowing peach colored material hanging from the left shoulder as he holds a sheer piece of fabric. The transparent veil stretches across most of the canvas, extending to the right hand of a female cherub wearing a jeweled tiara on the far right. On the same side of the canvas, but more medial, is another putto loosely draped in green fabric. To the left is the fourth cherub, a female with a laurel leaf tiara that is holding onto the edge of the Arms of France. A gold oval medallion, adorned with volute scrolls at the top and bottom, encircles a representation of the coat of arms of France from the Bourbon Restoration (1814/1815-1830). There is a large, curled leaf rising from the top volute with a husked border surrounding the light blue background with three gold fleur de lys. He exhibited at the Paris Salon as of 1874. Cauchois was a member of the Société du Salon des Artistes Français from 1890 onwards and was awarded bronze medals in 1898 and 1900, and a silver medal in 1904. He used a number of pseudonyms including F De Montaland, E Soyer, C Mary, Vermont and D Valmon. Towards the end of his life, Cauchois directed his efforts towards decorative compositions, producing among other things panels decorated with seasonal flowers for a school in the seventh arrondissement in Paris. His compositional style is characterised by vigorously applied and densely coloured brushstrokes. Measuring 56 H x 67 W, this large Dutch oil on canvas painting from the 1700s depicts a Southern landscape of a glen beneath a rocky cliff. The expansive valley stretches far into the distance, before terminating at a lake in front of a mountain. Numerous flocks of sheep can be seen throughout the basin, including a group high up on the towering cliff with green trees dotting the sand-colored rock. Most of the flocks in the distance are being tended to by shepherds, but interestingly, a group of four men has gathered in the foreground to engage in leisurely activities as their sheep, cows, goat, and dog await nearby. A few chateaus can be seen in the distance, but most of the architecture is in the style of a capriccio, in that they are dilapidated. The top of a stone obelisk is missing and there are some losses to the inscribed pedestal next to it that supports a lidded urn. Large pieces of broken rock are scattered about, with one slab being used as a seat/table for two shepherds playing cards. Several birds fly in the blue sky, with the setting sun giving the clouds hues of gray, orange, and pink.
