"Negro Night Club, " 1945 Painting Depicting African American Social Life

About the Item

A brilliant and lively depiction of a crowded cafe scene in 1945, this painting by Adalie Margules Brent depicts a slice of Black America at the end of World War II, probably in New Orleans, complete with a waiter, fashionably dressed men and women and wafts of cigarette smoke. The high-waisted pants and window pane suits on the men, and the floppy hats and white gloves of the women, attest to the couture of the day, which continues to fascinate us. Brent was a well-known illustration artist in Louisiana but her work is rarely found. This example is a masterpiece, and is reminiscent of the observant and lively paintings of American society by Miguel Covarrubias. The painting was once in the collection of actor Vincent Price, who was well known for his fine art connoisseurship. (Dimensions include frame.)
