"Nudes in the Surf", Atmospheric Painting with Male Nudes and Horses
About the Item
Continuing a tradition going back decades, Josef Pieper painted a series of seaside scenes with multiple nude male figures, riding and leading horses along the shore, their strong bodies and ruddy complexions suggesting a rugged, untamed existence. Giorgio de Chirico's scenes are best known, but other painters did the same, including Joaquin Sarolla, Oscar Matthisen, Anatoly Treskin, Karoly Kernstock and George Lambert, each reveling in the juxtaposition of cool water, nude physiques, and equine companions. Pieper grew up in Dusseldorf, studied in France, Italy and the Netherlands, and received the Dürer Prize in 1935, the State Prize of the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1936, and a scholarship from the Villa Massimo in Rome in 1938. The painting is oil on Masonite. (Dimensions include frame.)
