This is a charming painting of a cherub with an arm extending forward, perhaps hold out a bouquet of flowers. The painting dates to the mid-18th century and is probably cut from a larger painting. The putti is well-framed in a French a gold leafed neoclassical-style. Considering the quality of this painting, and although not signed, the painting was most probably painted by a recognized Italian 18th century artist.

Roman school, late 16th-early 17th century Praying Madonna Oil on canvas, 81 x 69 cm Frame 83 x 95.5 cm A divine whiteness reverberates with vibrant luster on the maphorion of the present Virgin. The palpable iridescence that structures the thin rosaceous garment, woven with the same fresh light, produces a slight rustle when she takes her hands off. The Madonna in fact takes a prayerful pose, opening her palms to underline her fervent ecstatic intention; the white neck is rendered with perishable fullness of pigments, like the hands, perfectly alive, and the very shiny eyes. With fine shrewdness the artist of the present styles the Virgin's hair with thin white ribbons, exacerbating the purity. An evocative light falls gently on the bust, a materialized sign of divine glory. The present can be traced back to the late Mannerist climate that prevailed in the capital after the emanation of the Tridentine council (1545-1563). The late Mannerist licenses that can still be seen there, such as the intense lyricism in the stylistic code adopted by the artist, are innervated in the new basic catechetical intent, which at the end of the century produced a certain figurative rigorism. The present, however, still responds to that extraordinary Roman dynamism that raised the capital to a bulwark for the entire mannerist lesson, matched only by a second artistic center, the Florentine one. The engaging carriage of the Virgin reflects the contemporary examples of Giuseppe Valeriano (1542-1596), a Jesuit painter, returning in the Marriage of the Virgin of the Roman Church of Jesus, as well as in the Madonna of Sorrows in the Recanati Altarpiece, equal ardor. Work of the famous Italian painter Max Marra, paint mixed technique on canvas dated 2004, titled "Judges", on the back of the painting we find a “Certificate of Authenticity”, a photo of the author with signature and his biography, since the latter is written in Italian, we proceeded to translate it here below. Still, on the back of the picture, we can see two small repairs done by the author himself. Max Marra was born in Paola, Calabria, in 1950. He lives in Monza and works in Lissone. Matured graphic and television experiences, from the 1980s he directed his research towards the integration of expressive technique in painting and sculpture with recycled materials. He works in the H: Orarte laboratory, which he shares with Mario De Leo. He links the teaching and commitment of cultural, organizational, and editorial promotion to artistic activity. With Mario De Leo, Luigi Bianco and other operators founded the Oason Movement in 1985 and then Harta, a bi-monthly cultural interaction, which was later joined by the Hartamotus Association. In 1988 he founded Lissone, with Mario De Meo, the interdisciplinary art studio H: Orarte, open to the consideration, dialogue, and confrontation of other artists, active in organizing cultural initiatives and events. His activity is linked to themes and specific cultural projects, identifiable in the contents and expressive tools. Strong hills, strong features, biting ideas, but also some stops in the white, which is air, which is infinite, to be captured in heavy frames, almost in a purification ritual. Guido Borgianni was born in New York on June 11, 1915, to Florentine Roberto Borgianni, a leather merchant, and Sara Herreshoff, who belonged to one of the wealthiest families in the United States and became a legend in the construction of the racing boats that also participated in and won the America's Cup. Guido was not even a year old when, once his parents' marriage had foundered, his father brought him back to Florence. Of Guido Borgianni's extraordinary gifts as a draftsman and painter, Galileo Chini, his neighbor, noticed, and he worked to see that talent refined. Thus Borgianni attended the Academy of Fine Arts under Felice Carena, a strict teacher but one who knew how to appreciate the qualities of his pupils. In the first part of his life he signed his works in black. Then, when he became a pointillist, he began to use red. Among his great admirers were Alessandro Parronchi and Oskar Kokoschka, who was captivated by Borgianni's paintings during his Florentine stay in 1949. Soffici, Saetti, Malaparte, Montale, Pratolini, and Cesare Zavattini, the screenwriter of Vittorio De Sica and Italian neorealism, all liked him very much, finding him "as beautiful as a Corot." In 1946 he exhibited at the Quadriennale in Rome. After his marriage to Simonetta Avila in 1954, his activities were enlivened by travel: in 1955 to Venice, in 1957 to Paris, from 1958 to 1962 around Italy, in 1964 to Spain, in 1971 to New York and Barbados Islands. In 1950 he was awarded a prize at the Mostra Nazionale del Fiorino in Florence, and in 1956 he was appointed Academician of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence. In 1957 he was awarded First Prize at the Portrait Exhibition at Dante's House in Florence. Upon his death, deep condolences were expressed by the president of the Florence City...

Oil on canvas, Villa Albrizzi - Veneto, 1963 Teddy Millington-Drake (1932-1994) was a nomad, linguist, bon viveur, aesthete and master gardener, but above all an artist. Discharged from service and in part inspired by his sister's anecdotes of her travels abroad, Millington-Drake embarked on a painting tour that took him to Lebanon, Iran, Iraq and Syria. He then rented a house, the Villa Albrizzi at Este, Veneto in Italy, and became a more frequent painter, particularly now of abstract murals. He befriended Freya Stark, a writer and traveler who lived nearby, and in Venice he became friends with Daisy Fellowes, Peggy Guggenheim, Barbara Hutton and Elsa Maxwell. In Este, he painted continually and more boldly, turning his hand to abstract murals. He later transformed a neglected Tuscan farmhouse in the village of Poggio which was co-decorated by his friend the designer John Stefanidis. There were vine-hung terraces and a skillfully landscaped garden. A swimming-pool was built on a shelf cut into the hillside, so that you felt yourself gliding towards the horizon, suspended in space as you swam. There Millington-Drake worked passionately at all forms of painting.
