About the Item

This ink and watercolor painting was the winning submission for a large mural at Fort Meade in Maryland in 1951, solicited by a design competition and intended for one of the service clubs. We do not know if the mural was actually painted, but it does not survive today. The theme of "Peace and Prosperity" was a classic subject in the post-World War II era, and the soldier-artist -- Achille Forgione -- painted a creditable allegorical design, complete with an idealized couple at the center, surrounded by the abundance of American agriculture, and with a map of the Western hemisphere behind. This piece is a classic example of Art Deco painting, and a fascinating piece of military history. (Dimensions below are for entire board; image is 22.25" high by 12" wide.)

"Nobel Prize for Peace", Pair of Mural Paintings by Savage, "Trust Law Labor"
By Eugene Francis Savage
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Large and remarkable, this pair of mural paintings -- perhaps serving as studies for much larger paintings -- were made in connection with the Nobel Prize for Peace by Eugene Savage, arguably America's leading Art Deco muralist in the 1930s and 40s. One painting is dedicated to the Nobel Prize, while the other is entitled "Trust-Laws-Labor-Peace." Both are centered around elegant female figures in Classical garb, one showing her with a sword, vanquishing an octopus while flanked by laborers and symbols of industry. Savage is best known for a spectacular set of murals illustrating the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S.S. Lurline, executed in the 1940s but not installed until the 1950s. The artist also painted other series of murals and paintings, include an enormous mural...

"Progress of Civilization" Art Deco Masterpiece by Muralist Aiden Lassell Ripley
By Aiden Lassell Ripley
Located in Philadelphia, PA
In this remarkable drawing, famed muralist Lassell Ripley depicts primitive man, warming himself by the fire with little to wear, looking into the distance toward the bright, white Art Deco spires of modern civilization. The contrast of early mankind with the advances of 1930s America is inspiring and beautiful, and Ripley clearly draw this to prepare for a mural project, probably unexecuted. Ripley is best known for his sportsman paintings, highly collectible today, but early in his career he became known for his murals, including several depicting the life of Paul Revere for the post office in Lexington...
