Philipp Hoyall Oil Painted Chromolithograph, Meditating Mischief

About the Item

A framed, over-painted Chromolithograph on canvas, a portrait of a young girl, circa 1880 -1890. The original oil painting was painted by Philipp Hoyall, (1816-1876) a German-Polish painter-lithographer, in 1872, cited by The Library of Congress. The painting was reproduced using the chromolithograph process and published by Louis Prang & Co. Hoyall’s works were very popular from 1860 to the late 1890s. This litho has been over-painted in oil colors and varnished, a popular technique employed in the late 19th Century. The title is Meditating Mischief, and shows a young girl in a Victorian Era drawing room, contemplating trouble. The background scene is overpainted and the canvas is then varnished, producing a heavy craquelure finish. Newly framed in a heavy gold-leaf wooden frame. Showing the original label on the verso of the canvas, 84 Connaught Terrace, Hyde Park, London, England. Canvas: 13 in. L x 11 in. W x .75 in. H Frame: 18 in. L x 11 in. W x 1.5 in.
