"Picking Apples in Arcadia, " Art Deco Painting with Nudes by Harlem Muralist
About the Item
This gorgeous, idyllic depiction of nude figures enjoying the beauty and abundance of Arcadia, some picking apples and others making love, was painted by David Karfunkle in the 1930s, who immigrated from Austria to America and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Later he painted two major murals for a courthouse in Harlem, New York City, entitled "Exploitation of Labor and Hoarding of Wealth." Each mural featured a crowded frieze of workers, some nude and other clothed, which critiqued modern society and revealed the artist's progressive sympathies. Those murals have been covered for years, but this lovely painting is newly available. It is signed in the lower right. The medium is oil on canvas.
