"Summer", Domestic Scene by Sheppard w/ Reclining Male Nude
About the Item
This moody and atmospheric painting depicting a quiet domestic moment is reminiscent of the best work of John Koch, but it was painted by a more recent master of figurative painting -- Joseph Sheppard -- who relished scenes with multiple nude figures, sometimes quiet and sometimes raucous. The male nude is shown in a highly unusual position -- reclining and from behind, the light washing across his shoulders and across his torso as he lifts his head to admire the verdant yard outside the window. In the shadows is a woman behind a folding screen, her clothing tossed over the screen and her body largely hidden by a spray of flowers. Much of the scene is dark, but the man's figure and the brilliant colors of the yard outside are bold and strong. Sheppard was highly prolific in the 1950s through the 1980s, painting many scenes, all redolent with life and energy. The painting is on masonite, and is signed in the lower lefthand corner.
