About the Item

Wenzel Ulrik Tornøe (Danish, 1844-1907) A very fine and large oil on canvas titled "Systue" ("The Sewing Room"). The finely executed artwork depicting the interior of a sewing room with eight dressmakers taking their lunch break; one opening a bottle of wine, another holding a glass ready for the pour, the seated center one holding a cup of tea with a semi-wrapped biscuit, one leaning against the back wall, another resting by a table and the other standing three maidens sharing catalogue page. Tornøe capture of the face expressions of exhaustion on the young seamstress’, as well as the details in the background and the efficacy of painting the transparent glass on they young girl’s hand are all truly exceptional, making this painting probably one of Tornø’s best artworks. Signed and dated: Wenzel Tornøe, 1885. Circa: Denmark, 1885. Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1885 no. 404. Wenzel Ulrik Tornøe (1844-1907) was born on September 9, 1844 in Svendborg Denmark, he was the son of Jens Wenzel Tornøe and Eleonore Jacobine Lacoppidan. Having studied under Carl H. Bloch (whose is considered the finest religious, genre and historical painter of his time), Tornøe surpassed many his peers in skill, technique and style. His works have sold at many prestigious auction houses around the world, including Sotheby’s, Christie's and many other works adorn the walls of private collections, museums, and European castles. Oil on Canvas "the Prohibited Reading" After Karel Ooms
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A Large Continental Oil on Canvas "The Prohibited Reading " after Karel Ooms (Belgium, 1845-1900). This beautiful executed painting depicts a historical scene of an old man and a young woman who are huddled over a bible. The pair is gazing in apparent concern or alarm, over the old man's shoulder, towards something outside of the picture. The scene is likely set in the 16th or 17th century when Protestants were prosecuted, amongst others, for reading the bible in the vernacular, a practice prohibited by the Catholic Church at the time. Signed (l/r) A. Ribas 15-12-913. Within a giltwood carved frame. circa: Probably Belgium, 1913. Karel Ooms was born in Dessel on January 27, 1845 as the youngest son of a large peasant family. At school his extraordinary talent for drawing was discovered. When he was twelve his hometown provided financial support which allowed him to study at the Antwerp Academy of fine Arts. One of his teachers at the Academy was Nicaise de Keyser, one of the key figures in the Belgian Romantic-historical school of painting and a painter of mainly history paintings and portraits. After graduating from the Academy 1865 Karel Ooms was welcomed with pomp in his home town Dessel. He painted two altarpieces for the local church Saint Nicolas, to express his gratitude to his city. Karel Ooms settled as an independent artist in Antwerp around 1871. He quickly established a reputation as a portrait painter. In addition, he received commissions for religious paintings and history paintings. He gained particular recognition with two large paintings...

Francois-Alfred Delobbe Oil on Canvas "The Little Neighbour", French, 1835-1920
By François-Alfred Delobbe
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Francois-Alfred Delobbe "The Little Neighbour", French, 1835-1920. A fine and charming Oil on canvas depicting a young lady standing next to a sweet young girl sitting at a well-head. Signed at lower centre: A. Delobbe. Label on reverse has title and medals Hors Concours Paris, 1874 and 1876. Within an ornate gilt-wood and gesso frame, circa 1870. Measures: Canvas height: 26 inches (66 cm). Canvas width: 19 3/4 inches (50.2 cm). Frame height: 38 inches (96.5 cm). Frame width: 34 inches (86.4 cm). François-Alfred Delobbe, (1835, Paris-1920, Paris) was a French painter in the Naturalist style. He was a student of Thomas Couture and William Bouguereau at the École des Beaux-arts, where he had been admitted at the age of 16, and had his debut at the Salon in 1861 with a portrait of his mother. Mythological, Orientalist and genre scenes in the Academic style were his original specialities. His career was truly launched when he obtained a commission to decorate the Town Hall of the recently annexed 15th Arrondissement; one of only eight such commissions granted. From 1875 until his death, he and his family were regular visitors at the artists' colony in Concarneau, where he had been invited to come by its founder Alfred Guillou and in whose home they sometimes stayed. The soft light of the region inspired him to focus on painting children and young women, generally in peasant scenes. He would often sketch profusely during the summer, then finish the painting during the winter at his Paris Studio. Most of his models came from the Concarneau region.
