"The Man with the Golden Arm" Original US Film Poster
By Saul Bass
Located in London, GB
Original US film poster.
Saul Bass was born in New York. Bass was a rotund, jovial character. After studying at the Art Students League and graduating from Brooklyn College, he moved west at the age of 26, and is credited with introducing an East Coast sensibility to marketing. He saw advertising as a means for funding his passion for the movies, and after 6 years working with a number of agencies, he finally had the funds to establish his own. All this time, he was forging ever-closer links with the film industry, and in 1954 this led to a commission from Otto Preminger to design the poster for Carmen Jones. The following year the director invited the artist to work on The Man With The Golden Arm...

Vintage Kid Creole and the Coconuts 1985 concert poster:
This rare Kid Creole and the Coconuts announcement/poster was published on the occasion of his December 26th, 1985 show at Carnegie Hall. This was the band's debut performance at Carnegie Hall, and it was written about in the New York Times: "THE POP LIFE; CARNEGIE HALL DEBUT FOR KID CREOLE" (December 25th, 1985).
Medium: Offset printed concert poster.
Dimensions: 11 x 17 inches.
Good overall vintage condition.
Unsigned from an edition of unknown.
American latin pop band founded by August Darnell aka Thomas Browder in 1980 in New York City. Fronted by Kid Creole (2) backed by the trio of The Coconuts and also featuring Coati Mundi, they enjoyed most of their success in the eighties. Their debut album was critically well-received but not successful commercially. Their second album was a concept album matched with a New York Public Theater stage production; it received positive reviews, with Darnell recognized as a clever lyricist and astute composer, arranger and producer. Their international breakthrough came with their third album, 1982's Tropical Gangsters, which hit #3 in the UK and spun off three Top 10 hits with Stool Pigeon, Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy and I'm A Wonderful Thing, Baby ; Dear Addy also made the Top 40. In the US the album was retitled Wise Guy and reached #145, and I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby flirted with the R&B charts. Dixit Darnell: "In the Savannah Band I’d modelled my style on 1930s/40s jazz singer and showman Cab Calloway, and I created Kid Creole as an extreme version of that, a sort of lounge lizard...

"Wear the 'FIGHTIN'EST' wings in the service" Vintage WWII Marines Poster 1942
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is an original World War II Marines recruitment poster from 1942. The poster, a color lithograph, was printed by the Alpha Litho. Co., out of Camden, NJ. In the center of the composition appears a striking blue eagle, which tears apart a Japanese plane with its talons. The poster displays the slogan "Wear the FIGHTINEST wings in the service, Fly with the Marines" in bold letters above and below the image. On the bottom in black lettering is the phrase: "Apply, or write, to nearest recruiting station." The Marines logo appears in yellow in the top right hand corner of the composition, set against a red background.
The Second World War ushered in the biggest government-led advertising campaign to date, critical to the wartime communication needs of every combatant: from raising money, recruiting soldiers and boosting volunteer efforts, to spurring production and provoking outrage at enemy atrocities. The Office of War Information (OWI) commissioned some of the nation’s leading artists to produce the stark, colorful graphic designs. The posters played to the fears, frustrations, and faith in freedoms that lingered in people's minds during the war.
The most common themes found in the posters were the consequences of careless talk, supporting the war effort at home through conservation, victory gardens, and the purchasing of War Bonds, and anti-German and Japanese propaganda...
