This extraordinary and rare mezzotint by Robert Charles Peter, a British artist, depicts a nude male figure, beaten and worn, being comforted and helped by the proverbial Good Samaritan. The artist's mastery of the human figure, in all its beauty and pathos, is evident here. Peter was a painter and printmaker born in Southwark, London, and was a member of various graphic institutions in London. It is signed on the lower left in pencil. This print was reproduced in a portfolio of images by Arthur Tooth and Sons in 1925.

Robert Charles Peter
Robert Charles Peter was a painter, etcher and mezzotint engraver. It is as a printmaker that he is best remembered. Peter was a painter and printmaker born in Southwark, London, and was a member of various graphic institutions in London. He lived in London and studied at the London County Council School. Peter was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and showed his work in 28 of their exhibitions. He also exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy.
