"Allegory of Life, " Art Deco Mezzotint with Nude Figures by Peter

About the Item

This rare, velvety mezzotint entitled "Allegory of Life" by Robert Charles Peter, a British artist, depicts three nude figures -- two male figures to the left, clasping hands, and female figure to the right, attempting to escape her bonds -- that are clearly immersed in a timeless struggle. The artist's mastery of the human figure, in all its beauty and pathos, is evident here, and he made this print in a black ink with a rich brown overtone. Although the print has a modern, Art Deco quality, it also has clear antecedents in Renaissance and Baroque painting and printmaking. Peter was a painter and printmaker born in Southwark, London, and was a member of various graphic institutions in London. It is signed on the lower left in pencil. This print was also published in a portfolio of images by Arthur Tooth and Sons in 1925. Media is ink on heavy paper. (Dimensions are for the full print, including margin.)
