"The Slave, " Highly Rare Art Deco Print with Nude Couple by Portnoff, 1930s

About the Item

Sensual and sinuous, this very rare print by an American sculptor depicts a nude female figure who is embraced by her nude male lover from below, the male serving as the trunk for the female tree who towers above. The artist, Alexander Portnoff, is largely known for his sculptures, but this print is a clear and special exception, and in fact was given to Elizabeth Swenson by the artist's widow in 1950. This gift followed a memorial exhibition hosted by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1949. The print is signed by the artist. (Dimensions include matte and frame).

    By Ray Frederick Coyle
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
This remarkable and stunning set of six sensuous prints, highlighted in gold and silver ink, was published and bound by John Henry Nash in 1926 to honor the life of his frequent collaborator, Ray Frederick Coyle. Coyle had died an early death, prompting Nash to issue this volume in a limited edition of 210 (this example is number 54), dedicating it to Albert Maurice Bender and William Randolph Keltie Young. Nash had established his own press 10 years before, and was dubbed by one admirer "The Aldus of San Francisco." Coyle illustrated several books published by Nash, including "Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice" and "The Sermon on the Mount...

  • "Asleep in the Hay, " Art Deco Print with Half-Nude Male by Lynd Ward, 1932
    By Lynd Ward
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
Famed for his woodcut book illustrations in the Art Deco era, Lynd Ward produced a series of dramatic images that reminded the reader of film noirs of the era, with spotlit figures in dark settings that seemed to presage flight, fear, hope and death. Unsigned plates from the books he illustrated are not uncommon, but signed prints such as this are rare. This image was an illustration for "Wild Pilgrimage" by Ward, published by Harrison Smith...
