About the Item

Photograph Digital print Size varies based on edition This work comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Located on the bank of the Niranjana river, Bodh Gaya is a holy pilgrimage site that is part of the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Bihar, India’s Gaya district. It is the most important of the four sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha, and it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. In this photo, Nicholas Vreeland captures the image of a Bhuddist monk praying at the sacred structure; the thoughtful composition places the subject in the lower quadrant of the image, slightly offset from the center. In this way, Vreeland effortlessly balances the vibrant color of the monk’s robes with the sunlit temple. Proceeds from the sale of this photograph (produced in an edition of 100) will benefit the Tibet Center in New York City. Nicholas Vreeland is the Abbot of Rato Dratsang, a Tibetan Government monastery under the patronage of the His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He is also the Director of The Tibet Center, New York’s oldest Tibetan Buddhist Center. Vreeland holds a Geshe degree, the highest Tibetan Buddhist academic degree for monks and nuns. Vreeland was born in Geneva, Switzerland and educated in Europe, North Africa, and the United States. In the late 1960s and early ‘70s, he worked as a photographer’s assistant to Irving Penn and Richard Avedon while studying film at New York University. He became a monk in 1985. Vreeland has edited two volumes of writing by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and is the founder of the "Photos for Rato" series of fundraisers in Europe and the U.S., which has featured his own photographic work, documenting the landscapes and people Vreeland has encountered on his travels. In 2012, the Dalai Lama appointed Vreeland the Abbot of Rato Monastery in India—the first instance of a Westerner being appointed to such a position in a Tibetan Bhuddist monastery. Vreeland now divides his time between New York and Rato Dratsang in India. Photographs he took during a horseback voyage through eastern Tibet were recently exhibited at Leica Gallery in New York.

Michael Bauer Baba Creme Limited Edition Print
By Phaidon
Located in New York, NY
Print Full bleed six-color silkscreen printed on Letra Ecru 300 gsm Measures: 34.00 x 24.50 in 86.4 x 62.2 cm Edition of 50 This work is signed and numbered by the artist on recto. The imagery for this edition is derived in part from what Michael Bauer calls his “telephone drawings”—quick, loose sketches made while talking on the phone or otherwise distracted. Bauer saves these doodles, no matter how rough or silly, and uses them as raw materials to be copied, scanned, altered, and combined. Bauer often works in series, making groups of paintings that metaphorically “talk back” to one another while simultaneously standing on their own as individual works. As he says, “Every painting that I do relies on the last twenty I did.” In a neat literalization of his process, this print includes the words “baba” and “creme,” recurring terms Bauer uses as verbal readymades for their phonetic qualities and mutable meanings. The amorphic, animalistic forms of German painter Michael Bauer are built upon color washes, meandering lines, and bulbous protrusions. Utilizing a variety of rendering techniques and materials, including pointillism, text and high-chroma colors, Bauer transforms his free-form compositions into dynamic and ornamented abstractions. He borrows from the colorful tradition of Modernist composition, juxtaposing collaged cutouts with a bevy of 20th century painting methodologies—including Cubist, Pop, and Surrealist techniques—to make the swirling paintings...
