About the Item

A fantastic and iconic pair of Paul Jacoulet (1906 - 1960) mid century woodblock prints "La Marieé, Seoul, Corée" ("The Bride, Seoul, Korea"), 1948 and "Le Marie, Seoul, Corée" ("The Bridegroom, Seoul, Korea"), 1950, both matted and framed in metallic toned frames with museum acrylic. The two woodblock prints depict a Bride and a Bridegroom in traditional Korean wedding attire. Both are portrayed seated on the floor in a traditional room setting. The bride is dressed in colorful striped hanbok in beautiful pastels. A small hwagwan crown studded with colorful pompoms graces her head. A long sash with longevity symbols and a tassel drapes gracefully from her waist. The bridegroom is dressed in a sumptuous embroidered silk gwando with a badge featuring a white bird. He wears a broad rimmed traditional hat, gat, embellished with tall peacock feathers upon his head. In his lap, he clutches a wooden duck, a traditional wedding gift and symbol of fidelity and love. Japanese Six Panel Screen with Hotei, Edo Period, Early 19th Century
Located in Austin, TX
A delightful Japanese six panel painted paper screen featuring the beloved figure Hotei, Edo Period, early 19th century. Hotei, called Budai in China, and known as the Laughing Buddha or Fat Buddha in the West, is considered to be an emanation of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future. In Japan, he also holds a special place as one of the Seven Lucky Gods, being the god of fortune, and protector of children. He is always portrayed as a mirthful and corpulent man, dressed in loose robes that show off his round belly. He carries a sack with him, said to be filled with treasure. As the protector of children, he is often portrayed with them playing on or around him, as he is here. The children portrayed in this screen are dressed in Chinese style clothing...

An assembled pair of Japanese Woodblock print by Paul Jacoulet (French, 1896-1960) entitled La Mariee and Le Marie, Seoul Coree (The Bride and The Groom). Created in 1948 and 1950, the two prints were not intentionally designed by Jacoulet as a matching pair. However, it became popular among his collectors to pair them as a couple due to the subject matter and the complimentary and symmetrical composition. La Mariee shows a shy bride against a rather plain window like background which made her elaborate wedding gown pop. Silver and MOP mica were used both in the background and on her dress, the sash and its embroidery. It is signed in plate and marked with the Red Owl stamp. Le Marie sets the groom slightly back as a "floating figure" against a more elaborate Korean folding screen...
