The Minor Clerics Regular, also known as the Theatines, were founded in 1524 by Saint Cajetan and Gian Pietro Carafa (later Pope Paul IV) during the Catholic Reformation. Dedicated to reforming the clergy and revitalizing the faith, they emphasized strict discipline, charity, and education. Today, Theatines remain active in parishes and missions worldwide, especially in Europe, the Americas, and India. This lithograph, part of the *Album ou Collection Complète et Historique des Costumes de la Cour de Rome*, was skillfully illustrated by G. Perugini. Translation of Introduction Text: A powerful interest is attached to the name of Rome, an even more profound interest to the name of Christ. Rome, through its genius, the vast intelligence of its warriors, orators, and legislators, prepared the cradle where Catholicism would be born, grow, develop, and establish itself. The history of Catholicism is the history of this great and glorious city above all others. Virgil, in a truly prophetic verse, said: "Tu regere imperio populos, Romane, memento." This prophecy has seen the most noble, illustrious, and glorious developments, all conspiring for the eternal city's glory: its history, arts, monuments, and the religion at its core. Yet no other city offers such a collection, from the monuments of Augustus to those of Sixtus V and Leo XII, from pagan temples to saints' tombs and martyrs' shrines. This union of grandeur is further illustrated daily by the magnificence of Catholic rites. With this album, we present the splendid costumes of the Papal dignitaries and the humble attire of religious orders. These costumes were inspired by the traditions handed down through centuries and were designed with unique precision by the talented artist G. Perugini. Pair of prints engraved by burin and painted in watercolor; both are a tribute to Cupid; the name Cupid - meaning desire, lust - was given by the Romans to the Greek god of love, actually called Eros. Alternatively, he was called just Love always by the Latins. As the son of Aphrodite, goddess of love, he, like his mother, was capable of any act, even deplorable. In the first print, which has been cut out and shaped, there are two young girls offering God a basket of fruit and a goblet of wine; in the second print a mature woman is about to be hit by Cupid's love arrow; both prints have been made with a beautiful burin engraving, then finished with delicate watercolors. The frames are handmade in gilded wood.
