About the Item

A gorgeous, extremely rare Pop Art original serigraph print by Sister Mary Corita Kent in collaboration with Sister Magdalen Mary (known as "Maggie" she was Corita Kent's one time instructor and later acting art agent) and Roman Catholic nuns of the Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, California. Known as God's own Pop artist, Sister Mary Corita Kent went straight from high school into Catholic convent life in 1936. While serving her order and teaching art at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles in the 1960s, she became a pop artist and gained some national notoriety with her striking and colorful works that often conveyed messages of hope and protest. Corita Kent's silkscreens were once compared to Andy Warhol's work and her banners and posters were frequently featured at civil rights and anti-war protest rallies in the 1960s and 1970s. This print features the phrase "love makes a gentle woman." We have not seen another copy. We found one, from an edition of 4, that featured the quote only against a white background but did not have any of the colorful graphic detail so are assuming this also came from a very small limited edition or could quite possibly be a one of one print making it quite coveted. The print is hand signed and dated ("group 1964'). It has been previously framed. The colors are rich, vivid, and deep. Again a very rare, hard-to-find image. Would be a great addition to a collection of Sister Mary Corita Kent's work or a great, eye-catching stand-alone Pop art piece. Her work is becoming increasingly popular and her prices are soaring. Framed dimensions: 20" high, 25" wide, 1" deep. Viewable art: 18.5" x 23.5".
