About the Item

Known as God's own Pop artist, Sister Mary Corita Kent went straight from high school into Catholic convent life in 1936. While serving her order and teaching art at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles in the 1960s, she became a pop artist and gained some national notoriety with her striking and colorful works that often conveyed messages of hope and protest. This print features a quotation from the 20th-century Jewish Rabbi, leader, scholar, and theologian Leo Baeck. As such somewhat of a rare work as a religious cross-over piece (see her use of Hebrew within the image). The full text within the image reads: “And a spirit is characterized not only by what it does but, no less, by what it permits, what is forgiven, and what it beholds in silence. Leo Baeck” The print is hand signed and noted as an edition of 250 by Corita. It has been previously matted and framed. The colors are rich, bold, and deep. A rare, hard-to-find image and sizeable work. Would be a great addition to a collection of her work or a great, eye-catching stand-alone Pop art piece. Corita Kent's work is becoming increasingly popular and her prices are soaring. Framed dimensions: 28.25" high, 28.25" wide, 1" deep. Viewable art: 21.5" x 21.5".
