About the Item

Representing Scandinavian Modernism at its best, this large and very rare linen tapestry depicting three of the performing arts -- theatre, music and dance -- was designed by Vicke Lindstrand and executed by Elsa Gullberg in 1944 for the opera house in Malmo, Sweden. Lindstrand designed a set of tapestries for the building, each including mythological subjects, such as the Centaurus constellation here, framed by flying birds and tall trees. Lindstrand is best known for a celebrated series of engraved pieces he designed by the renowned Orrefors glass company in Sweden in the 1930s and 40s, and then for Kosta Boda in later years. The tapestry is woven linen, and includes a row of hooks at the top to facilitate wall display.

"Shore Leave, " Large Art Deco Mural with Sailors at New Orleans Brothel, 1940s
Located in Philadelphia, PA
One of the most striking and remarkable Art Deco paintings we have ever offered, this depiction of a group of 1940s sailors visiting a New Orleans brothel is full of boisterous energy and strong color, providing an amused and amusing view of Navy life during or after World War II. The sailors -- in their tight white pants and youthful swagger -- are enjoying the company of an array of brothel workers, reigned over by a madam dressed in ruby red, with two young paramours to her side. Taking it all in is a group of jeering young men in straw hats to the right, and a young gay...
