About the Item

Reverse carved crystal, or Essex crystal, was a technique created by cutting pieces of rock quartz crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand painted. From the front, the picture appears to be almost three dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were some of the most commonly used. A beautiful reverse carved crystal bracelet from the Art Deco (ca1920) era by the wellknown company MARCUS & CO.! Made of 14kt yellow gold, the bracelet is decorated with three Essex crystal cabochons, featuring the head of a fox, a hunting dog, and a man on a jumping horse, all of which rest on a shimmery mother of pearl background. The painted carvings are highly detailed, including the animals' fur and facial features and the rider's apparel. The bezel set crystals are connected to the surrounding links, which are modeled off of a horse's tack and saddle equipment including a horseshoe, bit, and stirrup. On the reverse side of one of the crystal bezels is stamped "14K", "MARCUS & CO.", and "PAT.SEPT.1924". The bracelet is secured by a simple spring ring clasp. An amazing example of the era's work by Marcus & Co., this bracelet would be perfect for the equestrian enthusiast or any antique jewelry collection! Measurements: The bracelet measures approximately 7 3/4" long and just over 5/8" wide at its widest point. Condition: The overall condition of the bracelet is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold settings or to the reverse carved crystals. The clasp is secure and in good working condition.

Art Deco Reverse Carved Rock Crystal Equestrian Motif Multi Charm Bracelet
Located in Narberth, PA
Reverse carved crystal was a technique created by cutting pieces of rock quartz crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand painted. From the front, the image appears to be almost three dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were some of the most common motifs. A magnificent gemstone and reverse carved crystal charm bracelet from the Art Deco (ca1920) era! This incredible platinum piece features a wonderful compilation of 6 equestrian themed charms which dangle from a fine interlocking chain link bracelet. Each charm is unique and all are detailed with sparkling Single Cut diamonds throughout. The gorgeous charms include miniature versions of a horseshoe, two riding crops, a hunting horn, a medal with ribbons, and the image of a horse carriage a man and woman seen from the back window. Both riding crops and the hunting horn charms are each adorned with a delicate Essex crystal cabochon, which rests on a Mother of Pearl background and is bezel set within a round frame. The matching reverse carved images are incredibly artistic, depicting the face of a charming red fox with delicate hand-painted detail portraying expressive facial features, pointed ears, and vibrant fur. The medal charm features a similar Essex carved crystal cabochon adorned with a painted profile of a horse head featuring rich brown hair with a bridle and bit. The beautiful "ribbons" below are each decorated with calibrated sapphire stones, adding a wonderful pop of rich blue color to the design. Finally, the romantic charm of a loving couple in the carriage window features two ruby "lamps" on either side of the carriage and the man's top hat adorns rich black enameling. The fine chain bracelet is comprised of delicate rectangular shaped links that interlock together and fastens at a spring ring clasp stamped with an "IRID PLAT" purity mark. Truly a one of a kind piece, this beautiful equestrian inspired bracelet would make a fantastic addition to any collection! The bracelet measures approximately 7" in length. The charms vary in size with the largest one being one of the riding crops, which measures about 3/4" long (including the bail at the top) and about 1/2" wide. The smallest charm is the carriage and it measures approximately 5/8" long, including the bail at the top, and slightly less than 1/2" wide. The overall condition of the bracelet is excellent. Besides normal surface wear there is no apparent damage to the platinum setting. All of the gemstones and crystal cabochons are intact and securely set and the enamel is free of chips or scratches.
