About the Item

This beautiful portrait miniature pendant was most likely created in France. Condition Report: Very Good - A couple of chips to the surface of the glass. This is only apparent upon very close inspection and does not detract from the appeal and rarity of this piece. This piece has possibly had a brooch fitting at some point in its life too, as there are traces of an area where a hinge might have been. The Details... Although un-hallmarked, this pendant tests as having some silver content. It features a hand-painted portrait of a young woman wearing an empire line dress - most likely on porcelain. The portrait is signed. However, the signature is difficult to decipher. It is possibly 'J Lovelli Paris'. The silver frame of the portrait is detailed with a fan or feather-like design, which is set with small Marcasite stones. The pendant measures 4.5cm x 3cm. A Short History... It is possible to date this pendant to the late 18th or early 19th century due to the style of gown the lady in the portrait is wearing. Her dress is in the empire style, which evolved from the late 1790s and began as a chemise shift gathered under the breasts. The empire silhouette was popularised by Napoleon's first Empress, Joséphine de Beauharnais ans it derives its name from First French Empire - the period during which Joséphine was Empress of the French. Wear it With... Add this pendant to your favourite chain and perhaps add other charms to compliment it.
