This splendid and rare necklace "negligé" is formed of a chain yellow gold separated from 12 Coral angel skin pearls. The antique chain retains on the front a motif consisting of a line of coral angel skin and antique brillant cut diamonds seated millegrains which retains in pampille 2 drops of coral skin of angel surmounted each one of a antique cut diamond seated millegrains positioned asymmetrically. The clasp is a spring ring.

The term Jugendstil, meaning "Young Style," was derived from the magazine Die Jugend and describes an art and design movement which took place in Germany from c.1896 through to c.1915. Two main transitional cut (old mine) diamonds 0.70ct. Mix of old mine and rose cut diamonds in an 18 carat yellow gold with “silver Set” channel setting , approx 1 ct total. G/H/I, VS2-SI2.
Total diamond weight: approx 1.7carats
Setting diamonds in gold with a thin layer of silver, “silver set”, was a technique used in the Georgian/Victorian/Art Nouveau period as white coloured gold and platinum were not yet available. A very thin layer of silver was applied to the gold, on which the diamonds were set, to show them off to their best advantage (as the yellow would reflect and distort the white colour of the diamonds).
The Art Nouveau period was a short lived but worldwide movement which reached its peak at the end of the 19th Century and the first decade of the 20th Century. It had its roots in the Pre Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts movements in Britain in the 1860’s. Artists, such as William Morris, took their inspiration from the flora and fauna of nature and rejected the mass industrialisation and mechanisation of the Victorian age.
Art Nouveau continued with this theme and has a distinctive appearance with soft, curved shapes and lines and often depicted natural designs such as flowers, birds and the female form. Before the Art Nouveau period, the emphasis had been to design pieces with an emphasis on gem stones, diamonds, rubies emeralds etc. However, during the Art Nouveau period, jewellers adopted the idea of using other semi–precious stones “from nature” such as agate, garnet opal, moonstone, aquamarine and experimented with a wide variety of new techniques e.g. enamelling.
The “New Art” style became a worldwide movement encompassing all disciplines of the arts, and world class artists as far afield as Gaudi with his “modernisme” architecture in Spain, Louis Comfort Tiffany in New York with objects, Galle Glass in France and the Liberty & Co Archibald Knox designs in Britain, Jugendstil in Northern Europe and Faberge in Russia.
The movement flared brightly but briefly and by 1910 it was already going out of style to be replaced by Art Deco.

Antique Art Nouveau 4.76 Carat Turquoise and 15k Yellow Gold Pendant Circa 1900

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Art Nouveau 4.76 carat turquoise and 15 karat yellow gold pendant; part of our diverse antique jewelry and estate jewelry collections.
This fine and impressive antique pendant has been crafted in 15k yellow gold.
The feature pierced decorated, Art Nouveau style drop is ornamented with a collet set turquoise panel to the centre, accented with overlayed scrolling and vertical pale wirework.
The lower border of the design supports two articulating chains, each incorporating an independently collet set cabochon cut turquoise to the terminal.
The feature setting suspends via a yellow gold fancy chain, composed of alternating bar and arrays of trace links.
The turquoise pendant is hallmarked with the maker's mark for Murrle Bennett & Co (MBCo)* and 15k gold mark (15CT).
This impressive antique Art Nouveau pendant is supplied with an IDGL gemstone grading report card.
* The jewelry manufacturers Ernst Murrle and J.B Bennett operated as Siegele & Bennett from 1884 advertising themselves as 'manufacturers and importers of British and Foreign jewelry'; importing pieces from Pforsheim as this was Murrle's origin. In 1896 they administered Murrle Bennet & Co until 1914 when the firm was purchased and continued trade in London under the name White Redgrove & Whyte. This handsome necklace is perfectly Art Nouveau in design. The necklace features a substantial gold trace link chain, which is fastened with a sturdy box clasp. The chain is adorned with a slider, which the chain is get through, allowing one to tighten and loosen the necklace, so the wearer to place the slider wherever is most opportune. The slider is ornamented with a beautiful 5-petalled flower, which is decorated with graduating pink and yellow enamel, and set with a seed pearl to the centre. A finely crafted 15 carat yellow gold pendant of swirling form, set to its centre with a heart shaped amethyst of 4 carats approximately of deep purple colour, with a seed pearl encrusted crown and wings. Finished with a pear shaped periodot drop of 0.74 carats approximately.
The pendant features an integrated cable link chain with lengths of both 17 and 19 inches depending on the desired fit through two bolt ring fittings.
