About the Item

An authentic Spanish colonial (Bolivia) Potosi mint large "Piece of Eight" coin is set in a handmade line textured 18K bezel with a small 1.8 mm VS1 diamond accented bail. This coin was minted in 1745 (date visible on coin) during the realm of Philip V of Spain. It was part of the huge amounts of silver the Spanish acquired from the New World, particularly coming from the famous Potosi "mountain of silver' deposit in Bolivia. This was minted into crude 8 reales coins called "cobs" with the coat of arms of Castille and Leon on one side and mint marks, dates, and assayers marks on the other. The coins were cut into irregular shapes of standard weight. Later, these coins were sometimes cut into smaller pieces: hence the famous "piece of eight" of pirate times. This pendant comes with a laminated coin certificate of authenticity. It can be worn with either side showing. It is a substantial piece. Note the size relative to a dime. The handmade hammered oxidized silver and 18K gold chain shown is not included but can be ordered additionally. It comes in 20" and 24" lengths. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant.
