Jean Després 1950 Paris Artistic Geometric Ring in 18kt Gold with Round Diamond
Located in Miami, FL
Sculptural ring designed by Jean Després (1886-1980). Very rare collector's piece, created in Paris France by the artist goldsmith Jean Després, back in the 1950. This cocktail ring has been crafted with geometrics shapes in solid yellow gold of 18 karats and finished with hammered patterns. On top, with a platinum part for the setting of the diamond. Diamonds: Mount in a six-prongs setting, with 1 old European round cut diamond, 0.20 carats, F color, VS-2 clarity. Birthstone: Diamond for the month of April. Weight: 12.6 Grams, (8.07 Dwt.). Size: 8 sizeable. Measurements: 20 mm by 13 mm (Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with French marks; the head of the eagle and the head of the dog for the assay and warranty of the 18kt gold and the platinum respectively, the maker's mark JP inside a lozange cartouche and signed by himself, "J. DESPRES". Jean Després was born in 1889 in Souvigny, Burgundy, from glass blower parents, Jean Després starts his apprenticeship with a Parisian goldsmith, friend of the family, in 1905. First an industrial drawer for the military aviation during World War I, he took over his parents’ shop in 1920 and launched his goldsmith and jeweler workshop. He revealed himself to be an innovative creator with a unique way to work metals, and with new drawn shapes never seen before. He participated to his first show in 1926 at the Salon des Indépendants. Many shows and exhibitions then followed, such as the Salon d’Automne, the Salon of Decorative artists, and the Tuileries Salon. Jean Després chooses massive shapes rather than the classical goldsmith ornaments and avoids the use of precious gemstones in his jewel collection. His jewel production is defined by necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings where metals are combined with ivory, lacquer, ebony, onyx and sharkskin. His goldsmith pieces are inspired by the aviation aesthetic, crafted using hammered metals, and ample, generous and modern shapes. In the 1940’s, Jean Després is nominated President of the Goldsmith Syndicate, after receiving the Legion d’Honneur, in 1938. The artist’s works will be collected in France and worldwide, even after his death in 1980. (Maison Rapin...

Golconda Type IIa 2.36 Carat Diamond Flanked Solitaire Ring, circa 1950
Located in London, GB
Golconda type IIa diamond flanked solitaire ring. Set to centre with a Golconda type IIa octagonal emerald-cut diamond, D colour, VVS1 clarity, with a weight of 2.36 carats, in an open back claw setting, flanked by two tapered baguette cut diamonds in open back rubover settings with a combined approximate weight of 0.45 carats. The total approximate diamond weight is 2.81 carats, to an impressive flanked solitaire design featuring curving corner claws, a linear pierced gallery and angular open backholing, leading to raised shoulders and flowing through to a solid D-shape shank. Tested platinum, circa 1950, accompanied by Gemological Institute of America (GIA) report #2225798012. Diamonds are classified by scientists into two main types, depending on the presence of nitrogen in the diamond's chemical makeup. Type II diamonds contain little to no such impurities. This type is further subdivided into two groups, ‘a’ and ‘b’, both of which make up less than two percent of all gem quality diamonds. Type IIa diamonds are extremely rare, and the most pure of all diamonds, and consequently exhibit superior transparency. This type was first identified as coming out of India, namely the Golconda region. Some of the most famous diamonds in the world...

Carlo Weingrill: "love knot" circular three tone gold bracelet
Located in Malmö, SE
“The Love Knot” The bracelet was made by Carlo Weingrill in the 1950s. A lush 18 Karat gold bracelet in three tones of gold, width ca 20 mm, length 18.5 cm, weight 68 g. With Swedish import stamps and the mark for Taennler, weingrill´s distributor for Europe and North America in the 50s. This has been confirmed in writing by Carlofilippo Mensi Weingrill. Makes everyone spinning of envy! In their own words “A distinctive style does not come naturally; it requires close observation of the culture of the age, and a keen eye for form and line. Creativity is the art of balance, a way of turning subjective impressions into an entire aesthetic.” They describe their work as "contemporary elegance without any ostentation" Four generations of Italian gold artisans have built a House that exemplifies fine craftsmanship, exquisite detail, and timeless design. Carlo Weingrill was born in Verona, Italy, in 1856. At the age of eleven, he began his apprenticeship in a goldsmith’s shop. Upon completing his training at the age of 22, he made the decision to open his own workshop in 1879 in Verona. Every piece was handmade using traditional artisan techniques and designed to be worn and enjoyed regularly, sing the highest quality materials coupled with exceptional craftsmanship. The business flourished, and Carlo brought his two sons, Armando and Gastone, into the business. They took over upon Carlo’s death in 1924, and grew the small artisan concern into a major player in the industry, gaining worldwide prestige for their exquisite workmanship. Upon Armando’s death in 1959, Gastone continued to carry on as head of the business. Armando’s daughter, Paola Weingrill, was the next in line to take on the business. From the time she was a toddler, Paola was fascinated with the goldsmiths and their work. When her Uncle Gastone passed away in 1977, it was Paola who took over as chief executive officer. Paola groomed her son, Carlofilippo Mensi Weingrill, to assume the reins of the company upon her retirement. Carlofilippo is now head of the firm, representing the fourth generation to head this illustrious House. From the beginning, the company employed goldsmiths who handcrafted their jewelry, eschewing the use of machines. Workers sat at a table molding, shining and polishing the gold to a stunning finish. In Italy, a craftsman could become a goldsmith after apprenticing for two years, At Weingrill, apprenticeships lasted seven years.
