Presented is an original autograph of Honus Wagner, one of baseball’s greatest all-around players. A signed and dated card bearing his autograph, this is a special piece of sports memorabilia. The card reads, “J. Honus Wagner/ Pirates 1938” in looping black script. The date indicates this card was signed when Wagner was a coach of the Pittsburgh Pirates, rather than a player. Wagner was coach of the Pirates from 1933 to 1951. Honus Wagner was one of baseball’s greatest all-around players. The Louisville Colonels and Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop was a sensational hitter, base-runner, and fielder. He broke into the Majors by hitting .344 in 1897 and put together 17 consecutive .300 seasons. He was the National League batting champion for eight seasons and led the league in stolen bases six times. Wagner was one of the first superstars of American sports, nicknamed “The Flying Dutchman.” His rise paralleled the development of baseball as the national pastime, and his playing skills remained legendary throughout his impressive career of twenty-one seasons in Major league Baseball. From 1897 to 1917, Wagner played three seasons with the Louisville Colonels and eighteen with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He retired with more hits, runs, RBI, doubles, triples, games and steals than any other National League player. Wagner returned to the Pirates to coach from 1933 until 1951. With two national championships and 16 Big Ten Championships, Michigan State is rightfully categorized as one of the perennially elite programs in college basketball history. The Spartans won the National Championship in both the 1979 NCAA Tournament and 2000 NCAA Tournament. The 1979 National Championship story was highly touted as Magic vs. Bird. It was achieved by a team under the coaching of Jud Heathcote that included MVP Magic Johnson, Greg Kelser, and Jay Vincent. Presented is a vintage Spalding leather punching speed bag. The bag is stamped "Spalding/ Made in the USA/ 73-312/ Genuine Cowhide" on the front of the bag. The tan cowhide bag is machine sewn with leather laces at top, with seven lace holes, and a leather hanging loop. The bottom is stamped "Inflated to 3 LBS. Use Hand Pump." in black ink. The speed bag model dates to the 1940s. The famous sports company, A.G. Spalding, owed much of its success to its namesake Albert Goodwill Spalding. Spalding began his career as a well-renowned baseball player. Spalding helped to form the National League for baseball. The National League was responsible for formalizing the rules and regulations of the American pastime in 1876. Albert Spalding was added posthumously to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The company A.G. Spalding became the first to produce official regulation-sized sports equipment such as tennis balls, footballs, basketballs, and golf balls.
