'Musical Abstract', Smithsonian, Jewish Museum, Woman Artist, Phoenix, New York
By Beth Ames Swartz
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'Beth Ames Swartz' (American, born 1936) and dated 1966. Primarily working in the idioms of abstraction and semi-abstraction, Beth Ames Swarts's paintings and mixed-media works are commonly informed by philosophical and spiritual concepts shared by people of different cultural world-views, and incorporate both symbols and words in the vocabulary of their visual language. Beth's art practice has been guided by aesthetic philosophies including Wassily Kandinsky’s Concerning the Spiritual in Art and Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, and inspired by various religious and philosophical systems including Native American Healing practices, Buddhism, Jewish Mysticism, and Christianity in order to facilitate communication with viewers on both a conscious and unconscious level. Swartz syncretizes a variety of spiritual traditions in her work in order to reveal their inherent commonality. Born in New York City, Beth grew up in Manhattan, and by her mid-teens, was studying at the Art Students League in New York in the late 1940s. Her education continued at NYC's High School of Music & Art followed by Cornell University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science (1957), followed by a Master of Arts degree (1959) from New York University. Beth Ames Swartz exhibited nationwide including at over seventy solo exhibitions including a solo show at The Jewish Museum in New York. In addition, she participated in three major traveling museum exhibitions and her work is held in the permanent collections of numerous major museums including the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian. She received the Governor's Individual Artist Award in 2001 in Arizona, and a retrospective of her work was mounted in 2002 at The Phoenix Art Museum, with a monograph about her work co-published by The Phoenix Art Museum and Hudson Hills Press. "Nasturtiums" Chiura Obata, Japanese American, Red and Blue Delicate Flowers
By Chiura Obata
Located in New York, NY
Chiura Obata Nasturtiums, circa 1940 Signed and stamped lower left Watercolor on paper 15 x 9 5/8 inches Born in the Okayama prefecture of Japan, Chiura Obata was adopted by his uncle, an artist. As a child he was trained in ink painting, and at 14 he was apprenticed to the painter Murata Tanryo in Tokyo. He also studied with Kogyo Terasaki and Goho Hasimoto. In 1903, Obata moved to San Francisco and began working as an illustrator for The New World and The Japanese American, two of the city's Japanese newspapers. He also did work as a commercial designer. Obata helped establish the East West Art Society in San Francisco in 1921, which sought to promote cross-cultural understanding through art. This goal was reflected in his embrace of the Nihonga style, which fused traditional Japanese sumi-e ink painting with the conventions of western naturalism. He spent much of the 1920s painting landscapes throughout California, and among his favorite subjects were mountain landscapes. In 1927, he visited Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada, creating over a hundred paintings and sketches of the high country. Obata stayed in the USA until the death of his father in 1928. Between 1928 and 1932, he worked in Tokyo as a painter and transformed his California landscape watercolors...

Under Scattered Clouds: Abstract Chalk Drawing of Blue Clouds on Vintage Paper)
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract mixed media drawing of blue, black and grey clouds on vintage book pages 'Under Scattered Clouds' by Louise Laplante chalk on vintage collaged book pages. Artwork measures 26 x 40 inches unframed 30 x 43 inches in light wood frame This dreamy, whimsical drawing of fluffy light blue clouds was created by Louise Laplante in 2019. The vivid silhouette of clouds are suspended in space, drifting against a background of an early 20th century book of fables. Illustrations on the page include a hot air balloon, a rocking horse, a pheasant. In certain segments the stenciled images are delicately brushed over with a thin wisp of chalk which adds a delicate textured effect to the drawing. About the artist: Interested in blending the old world with the new, mixed media artist Louise Laplante combines her original images with ephemera of the past, enticing a conversation about it’s “relevancy to the present.” Her compositions begin with vintage book pages, personal handwritten letters, sheet music, or instruction from old guides on etiquette or science. While the text itself is weighted with reference to a particular subject, the visual of the typed or handwritten words and printed illustrations establish a unique pattern. These layered backgrounds are superimposed with opaque charcoal drawings that are inspired by the themes read between the lines. Most recently, the artist has opted for larger scale work, combining multiple sheets of vintage paper to expand her unique motifs. Laplante exhibits across the Northeast and has shown with Carrie Haddad for more than ten years. Artist Statement: My work connects the texts, and ideas, in the vintage book...
