Stones
By Marc Balakjian
Located in New Orleans, LA
Marc Balakjian was enigmatic in his subject matter creating images that are disturbing in their ambiguity. Is this image just striped fabric tied with ropes on a platform or is this is a flag-draped coffin symbolizing those who passed "in memory of an historic phrase"? Politicians may turn the phrase but a price must be paid. This small edition mezzotint was created in 1975 in an edition of only 5. Armenian by descent, Marc Balakjian was raised in Lebanon. He spent his early years in the small town of Rayak, before moving to Beirut at the age of 10. He came to England in 1966, initially to study architecture with a firm in Oxford. He then decided to study art at Hammersmith College of Art and took up a postgraduate degree in printmaking at the Slade School of Art in 1971. After graduating he began working at Studio Prints in 1973, just as it was establishing itself in Queen’s Crescent. By 1976 he had become a full time partner, collaborating with other artists as well as continuing his own work, much of which is inspired by his Armenian and Lebanese culture and heritage. By the 1980s work was falling off, so Balakjian and Studio Prints introduced in-house plate-making to serve painters and sculptors who had little experience with printmaking. Artists such as Leon Kossoff, Frank Auerbach, Lucian Freud and Ken Kiff...

Still Life, from To and From Rrose Selavy, for Marcel Duchamp, Lt Ed silkscreen
By Shusaku Arakawa
Located in New York, NY
Shusaku Arakawa Still Life, from To and From Rrose Selavy, for Marcel Duchamp, 1967 Limited Edition Silkscreen on velincarton (thin board) paper 10 1/2 × 13 1/4 inches Limited Edition of 60 Hand signed, titled and dated on the front Unframed The entire portfolio, including the present work, is referenced in the Marcel Duchamp catalogue raisonne: Arturo Schwarz The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp, Abrams, P.532, 344c Eager to share Marcel Duchamp with Japanese audiences, Shuzo Takiguchi - a Japanese-born poet, critic, and artist with ties to Surrealist circles, assembled an international portfolio of graphic works by various artists with strong ties to Duchamp, to accompany the deluxe version of his monograph, "To and From Rrose Sélavy". The present work was created for this portfolio by one of Marcel Duchamp's friends, Shusaku Arakawa. It is signed, dated and titled on the front - and can be exhibited both vertically and horizontally - (see photos). The present work, along with others in the portfolio, was published in Japan and is rarely found stateside. Shusaku Arakawa (荒川 修作 Arakawa Shūsaku, July 6, 1936 – May 18, 2010) who spoke of himself as an “eternal outsider” and “abstractionist of the distant future,” first studied mathematics and medicine at the University of Tokyo, and art at the Musashino Art University. He was a member of Tokyo’s Neo-Dadaism Organizers, a precursor to The Neo-Dada movement. Arakawa’s early works were first displayed in the infamous Yomiuri Independent Exhibition, a watershed event for postwar Japanese avant-garde art. Arakawa arrived in New York in 1961 with fourteen dollars in his pocket and a telephone number for Marcel Duchamp, whom he phoned from the airport and over time formed a close friendship. He started using diagrams within his paintings as philosophical propositions. Jean-Francois Lyotard has said of Arakawa’s work that it “makes us think through the eyes,” and Hans-Georg Gadamer has described it as transforming “the usual constancies of orientation into a strange, enticing game—a game of continually thinking out.” Quoting Paul Celan...

Pop Art Appropriation Print: Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, SIGNED

Richard Pettibone The Appropriation Print: Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, 1970 (Andy Warhol's Electric Chair, Frank Stella's Empress of India and Roy Lichtenstein's Spray) Silkscreen in colors on smooth wove paper Pencil signed and dated 1971 on the front Frame included: Elegantly floated and framed in a white wood frame under UV plexiglass in accordance with museum conservation standards Measurements: frame: 15 7/8 x 19 3/4 x 1 3/4 inches sheet: 12 1/4 x 16 inches This is one of Richard Pettibone's most iconic, popular and desirable prints done in 1970 - during the most influential era of the Pop Art movement. This homage to Andy Warhol, Frank Stella and Roy Lichtenstein exemplifies the type of artistic appropriation he was engaging in early on during the height of the Pop Art movement - long before more contemporary artists like Deborah Kass, Louise Lawler, etc. followed suit. Pencil signed and dated recto. It was created in limited edition - though the exact number is not known. More about RIchard Pettibone: As a young painter, Richard Pettibone began replicating on a miniature scale works by newly famous artists, and later also modernist masters, signing the original artist’s name as well as his own. His versions of Andy Warhol’s soup...

60s Carzou French Modernist Color Lithograph Paris Train Station LeChemin de Fer
By Jean Carzou
Located in Surfside, FL
This is a hand signed in pencil, vintage, limited edition lithograph modern art print, printed in Switzerland on Rives French art paper in 1968. in shades of pink, black, white. Similar to iconic works by Saul Steinberg. Jean Carzou (Armenian: Ժան Գառզու, 1 January 1907 – 12 August 2000) was a French–Armenian artist, painter, and illustrator, whose work illustrated the novels of Ernest Hemingway and Albert Camus. Carzou was born Karnik Zouloumian (Armenian: Գառնիկ Զուլումեան) in Aleppo, Syria to an Armenian family. Carzou later created his name from the first syllables of his name and surname, and added a Parisian nickname, "Jean". He was educated in Cairo, Egypt before moving to Paris in 1924 to study architecture. Carzou belonged to the art movement called "La Jeune Peinture" ("Young Picture") of the School of Paris, with painters like Bernard Buffet, Yves Brayer, Jansem, Jean Carzou, Louis Vuillermoz, Pierre-Henry, Daniel du Janerand, Gaston Sébire, Paul Collomb, Jean Monneret, Jean Joyet and Gaëtan de Rosnay. He started working as a theater set decorator but quickly realized he preferred drawing and painting. In 1938, more than a hundred exhibitions of his works were organized in Paris, in the French provinces and abroad. In 1949, he received the coveted Hallmark prize. Carzou, like his contemporaries Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso was part of a generation that witnessed many wars and was deeply affected by it. Carzou made his first lithograph in 1951 and was prolific in both the lithographic and etching medium. He had solo exhibitions throughout the world and was elected to the French Academy of Fine Arts in 1977. In 1952, he created costumes and sceneries for Les Indes Galantes of Rameau at the Opéra de Paris. He continued with Le Loup (1953) for "Les Ballets" of Roland Petit, Giselle (1954) and Athalie (1955) at the Opéra and "La Comédie française". Carzou mastered a number of mediums, though his line drawing and engraving would become well known as illustrations for some of the 20th century's most revered writers, including Hemingway, Albert Camus, Ionesco and Rimbaud. Carzou produced stunning work of painted glass and porcelain, in pencils, gauche and pastels as well as oil painting, often choosing to work on textured or irregular fabrics and papers rather than traditional canvas. Carzou was elected a member of the Institut de France, Académie des beaux-arts, succeeding in the seat left vacant by the death of painter Jean Bouchaud in 1977. He was also awarded the National Order of Merit of France. Among his closest friends were the painters Daniel du Janerand, Gabriel Deschamps, Louis Vuillermoz, Pierre-Henry, André Vignoles, Pierre Gaillardot, Rodolphe Caillaux...

"Caulophyllum I, " Framed Limited Edition Giclee Print, 30" x 30"
By Roger Mudre
Located in Westport, CT
This abstract contemporary painting by Roger Mudre features a cool-toned palette with an iridescent quality. Circles with light outlines overlap one another in varying blue, green, white shades to create a larger blue circular form at the center of the composition. The painting, which is 36" x 36" (37.5" x 37.5" framed), transforms and shimmers in changing light due to hand-applied metal-leaf under-layer. It is framed in a gold-hued floater frame. It is wired and ready to hang. The focus of Roger Mudre’s work is the circle. This Connecticut-based artist finds inspiration in the colors and patterns of nature. Painting in jewel toned acrylics, he builds sheer layers of color on a subtly reflective metal leaf surface to create a picture plane that changes with the viewer’s perspective. Roger's work is part of many corporate and private collections including Hotel Zero Degrees in Norwalk, Connecticut, Frontier Communications, and the Energizer Corporation in Shelton, Connecticut. Roger is influenced by Joesph Albers...

Custom Framed in a wooden black frame, floated on a white backing, with white spacer. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Known for his modular white cube sculpture, geometric drawings and abstract design paintings including many wall paintings that took teams of people to execute, Sol LeWitt was a major promoter of dominant post World War II Conceptualism and Minimalism. He used geometric shapes and lines to challenge his viewers, and sometimes they seemed logical and other times they seemed to have no basis in either reason or reality. Although he was highly active in New York City, he shied away from any semblance of art celebrity life style and spent much of his later life working from his home and studio in Chester, Connecticut. At the beginning of his career when he was gaining notoriety, conservative critics panned him fiercely. Seeking to get away from the frenetic activity of the New York art scene, he went to Spoleto, Italy in the 1980s and remained there for many years. The influence of Italian culture seemed to lend a new opulent quality to his work, and also the launching of his wall paintings, which he called drawings even though they were done with acrylic paint. "He began making colored flagstone patterns, spiky sculptural blobs and ribbons of color, like streamers on New Year's Eve, often as enormous decorations for buildings around the world. It was if he had devised a latter-day kind of Abstract Expressionism . . ." (Kimmelman) Of his personal modesty it was written: "He tried to suppress all interest in him as opposed to his work; he turned down awards and was camera-shy and reluctant to grant interviews. He particularly disliked the prospect of having his photograph in the newspaper." (Kimmelman) Sol LeWitt was born in Hartford, Connecticut to Russian immigrant parents. His father, a doctor, died when Sol was age six, and he and his mother then went to live with an aunt in New Britain, Connecticut. His mother encouraged his art talent, and enrolled him in classes at the Wadsworth Atheneum. LeWitt's subsequent residence in Chester, after he was a well-known artist, was near the Atheneum, and he became a strong supporter of that institution including the securing of a long time loan to it of a highly prestigious private collection of modern art. LeWitt earned a B.F.A. degree from Syracuse University in 1949, and then was drafted in the Korean War. His special assignment was making posters for the Special Services. From 1955 to 1956, he worked as a graphic designer for architect I.M. Pei, who was beginning his career. He also did pasteups for Seventeen magazine...
