Elephantis – Max Garner Reidy – Animal Art for Sale Online, RA Summer Exhibition
By Max Garner Reidy
Located in Deddington, GB
Max Garner Reidy Elephantis Limited Edition High quality Photographic print Sold Unframed Image Size: Image Height 84.1cm (33.1″), Image Width 118.9cm (46.8″) This is a monochromatic limited edition photographic print by Max Garner Reidy Elephantis was a Bull Elephant, taken in South Africa, whilst on a safari. When greeted by a small group Elephants I couldn’t help but notice how small their tusks were. I asked the ranger, why their tusks are so small. He replied “Sadly in Africa the Elephant population is now made up, predominantly of Elephants with shorter tusks. This is a result of poachers, killing longer tusked Elephants, in order to feed the illegal Ivory trade. This results in an unnatural form of “natural selection”, whereby the Elephants most likely to survive long enough to reproduce, are those with short tusks.” My name is Max Garner Reidy, I’m a 20-year-old photographer from North West London. My work, ‘Elephantis’ was recently amongst those being exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition...

Lion of the Kalahari by John Kenny. Portrait, Unmounted C-type Print, 2010
Located in Coltishall, GB
This Himba elder was at a huge funeral gathering in the western Kaokoland between the largest town of the area, Opuwo, and Otjitando. The area was flat, and very dry, with a strong wind constantly whipping up fine, dry dust and flinging it across the landscape. The funeral was quite different in feel. People were engaged in deep, animated conversations, they smiled and laughed a lot in more of a festival atmosphere than one of sadness. Long parted friends came together to celebrate the life of the man who had passed – a man of huge popularity and social status. The funeral was to last a week and the crowd was swelling each day. There were huge animal carcasses being cooked on fires tended carefully by younger Himba men. I watched from a distance, concerned at the need for privacy at such a gathering, but a number of groups waved for me to come over. The elder maintained a natural authority within his small circle, and I noticed that others spoke to him with deference. In the past this man had hunted and killed desert lions. He then pointed to a large gouge on the man’s thigh – the results of one of these encounters. The lower necklace on this man are made of the soft ears of lambs. The small metal spear...

Himba Child l by John Kenny. Portrait, Unmounted C-type Print, 2010
Located in Coltishall, GB
In the far north of Namibia as you head towards the border with Angola at Epupa Falls, barely visible tracks radiate off the main dirt road into bush and disappear across sandy, dry river beds. Arid conditions and past hunting have left few animals and the barren terrain create few obvious landmarks, but the Himba are able to navigate easily. Himba villages have a circular boundary around the kraal (village) staked out by tall, tightly packed branches and a single route in and out. The outer wall surrounds a number of huts, each inhabited by one of the man’s wives and her children. Sometimes there are 6, 7 or more wives in the Himba kraal, and a lot of children! When they are young, Himba children of both sexes dress and look remarkably similar. Often the only way to differentiate is by the number of thick hair strands...

I came across the intense stare of this Pokot lady at a Friday market on a mountain summit in northern Kenya; it was the same market where I photographed a Samburu goat herder wrapped in blankets. The Pokot and Samburu are engaged in a constant battle over grazing rights, the two groups tend not to mix even at the market. This lady and the women with her were watched carefully by armed Pokot warriors as they walked amongst the market’s wooden stalls. The journey to the market involves walking many kilometres across the valley floor and then a 1000m ascent to the mountain pass. When she left the market she carried no purchases with her an example of the exertions and huge distances that people in the north endure in order to trade and buy their basic necessities. John Kenny...
