I met this stunning Rendille moran (warrior) in the shade of trees near the base of Mount Nyiru. Spring waters, flowing from the huge mountain plateau above, ensure year-round greenery in this area of great aridity.
The morans of both the Rendille and the Samburu wear beautifully ornate necklaces. Each design is specific to warriors within a clan and to a time in history (the ‘age-set’ that a young man enters after circumcision). I met this young married Samburu in the middle of a busy market in western Kenya. She was with a group of young women browsing the wooden stalls dotted across the dusty red earth in the lowlands of the Matthew’s Range. In Samburu communities young men spend years as warriors – a wandering lifestyle which make it impossible for them to marry. Instead they take girlfriends and give them beads and necklaces to indicate their relationship.
Samburu girls adore receiving these presents and adorn themselves in more and more necklaces. The girl in this picture, although now married to an elder, still shows her beads from the time of being promised to a warrior: they are the band of 8 or so thin necklaces...

Elephantis was a Bull Elephant, taken in South Africa, whilst on a safari. When greeted by a small group Elephants I couldn’t help but notice how small their tusks were. I asked the ranger, why their tusks are so small. He replied “Sadly in Africa the Elephant population is now made up, predominantly of Elephants with shorter tusks. This is a result of poachers, killing longer tusked Elephants, in order to feed the illegal Ivory trade. This results in an unnatural form of “natural selection”, whereby the Elephants most likely to survive long enough to reproduce, are those with short tusks.”

I met this Sadhu with such kind eyes in Kashi (another name for Varanasi) on one of the chaotic ghats. We tried and failed to take the portrait as crowds and sacred cows constantly streamed between us. Fortunately a group of young boat-hands gave up their relatively sheltered corner of the ghat, where they had been gambling over cards, to give us five minutes of calm space.
John uses simple natural light and builds primitive makeshift studios from locally acquired white sheets! The suffuse light allows him to capture a remarkable level of detail. His subjects calm demeanor belies the reality of harsh arid winds, extreme temperatures and dust.
John Kenny’s black and white photographic portraits are taken on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa and India. All shot with natural light and with the subjects in their day to day attire they reveal the pride and strength inherent in tradional ways of life.
