ABOUT “There’s no color in my work,” says Shlafer, “I either burn it, bleach it, or leave it alone.” Shlafer’s sculptures are designed with rudimentary material such as pine, oak, and spruce salvaged as driftwood on the Eastern end of Long Island. The artist started this body of work during the pandemic after he stumbled upon the charming discoveries while traveling on foot by the coastline. Always a wayfarer at heart, he drew inspiration from his youth of traveling on a motorcycle through Southern Africa and seeing indigenous art made from ordinary earth objects within local villages. “Wishbone 1” a 5 Foot sculpture, charred white oak with a tinted aqua resin base that reflects an omen of resilience and hardiness in light of the hardships of the past pandemic year, In another “Tune” a bleached spruce fence post narrowed into a tuning fork shape with a slate base. It welcomes a ceremonial vibe. “At the end of the day, that’s the energy we all crave,” says Shlafer, “who doesn’t respond to that?” “Mushroom #3” a charred white oak sculpture that is versatile in design so it can act as an end table or a stool. Each summer, Rice curates her favorite show, the Summertime Salon, which reminds us of this exact seasonal sentiment. The two, long walls of the gallery become mosaicked, top to bottom, side to side, in photographs that evoke all the preeminent feelings and memories of summer. Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece comes into fruition. This year is no exception. The show is a haven of what the Robin Rice Gallery stands for, a community of art and experience. As the largest annual exhibition, the Summertime Salon is carefully pieced together, the results are staggering. The works of the 53 gallery artists come together communally, reinforcing the overall sense of unity that the show creates as a whole. In knowing the photographs so fluently, Rice strategically places them together in a way that will enhance the individual stories contained in each. Details from one image flow from into the next, elevating every photograph in a distinctly unique way. This year’s invitational image, “Surf Club” by Silvia Lareo-Vasquez, features a woman in a vintage sun hat reclining in the pool with a drink. The black and white image evokes an extreme sense of nostalgia in its cinematic portraiture and supple texture. Though the figure of the woman is tauntingly beautiful, the drink is the darkest tone, nearing black, and is centered in the frame. With this, we are reminded of the refreshing notes of summer and the utter serenity of taking the day off to relax. The show’s imagery is evocative of all eras of summer, thus any viewer can relate or connect to one of the images. From her November 15, 1996 NYT obituary: Nell Blaine, a widely respected New York landscape painter and watercolorist, died yesterday at Mount Sinai Hospital. She was 74 and had homes in Manhattan and Gloucester, Mass. Ms. Blaine, who had been hospitalized since July, had been confined to a wheelchair since 1959, when she contracted polio. Ms. Blaine was born in Richmond, Va., in 1922, and first studied at the Richmond School of Art, now part of Virginia Commonwealth University. She moved to New York in 1942 to study painting with Hans Hofmann and later studied etching and engraving at Atelier 17 with Stanley William Hayter. During her first years in New York, her work, which had previously been tightly realist, turned abstract, inspired by Mondrian, Leger and Jean Helion. At one time she was the youngest member of the American Abstract Artists. She was also a founding member of the Jane Street Gallery, one of Manhattan's earliest artists' cooperatives, and had her first solo show there in 1945. Just as Ms. Blaine was becoming known as a promising abstract painter, and gaining the admiration of such critics as Clement Greenberg, she started to shift back to representation. Inspired in part by a trip with Larry Rivers in 1950 to Paris, where she was especially impressed by the work of Vuillard and Bonnard, she immersed herself in the tradition of 19th-century European painting. From the mid-1950's, she cultivated an increasingly painterly and colorful style, usually working directly from nature, or still life, with particular emphasis on the forms and hues of flowers. Her work retained a sense of all-over structure and pulsating energy that she nonetheless credited to abstract art. ''It all goes back to Mondrian,'' she would say. In the 1950's, Ms. Blaine was prominent among a circle of New York artists and poets that included John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch, Mr. Rivers, Jane Freilicher, Leland Bell, Louisa Matthiasdottir, Robert De Niro Sr. and Rudy Burckhardt. She had her first solo show of representational work at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in 1953 and was represented by the Poindexter Gallery until it closed in 1978, and, in recent years, by the Fischbach Gallery. During the 1950's she supported herself as a commercial artist, designing brochures for art galleries. In 1955, she designed the original logo, column heads and layout for The Village Voice. In 1957, Ms. Blaine was featured in Life magazine as one of five leading young female artists in America. In 1959, after several months of traveling and painting in Greece, she contracted severe bulbar polio on the island of Mykonos. ABOUT Born in 1967, Piussi was raised in Florence where he studied at the Istituto d’arte, majoring in sculpture and painting and completing his artistic education at Milano’s Brera Art Academy. He lives in Florence, pursuing painting, bas-reliefs in terracotta and in bronze, and bronze sculpture. Piussi presents an ideal, almost childlike world which can be found below everyday events, a step outside the flow of time, yet still a part of contemporary life, with a nod to Alex Katz and David Hockney. The drama, or lack thereof, is played out in simplified, almost abstract spaces. Pure in intent, Piussi’s oeuvre are inspired by the Early Renaissance. Snapshot images of a world reduced to its essence, the apparently comic-book style has echoes of Giotto, Paolo Uccello, of medieval illuminations. Rather than mimicking the appearance of nature, Piussi reaches for its essence, without distracting details. The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to present At 1000 Feet, a photographic exhibition by Dinesh Boaz. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, November 6th from 6pm to 8pm. The show will run through January 5, 2020. At 1000 Feet is Boaz’s first solo exhibition at the Robin Rice Gallery. As a photographer, Boaz defies a traditional approach to perspective and instead situates himself quite literally in the sky above. The resulting work is breathtaking and arresting. Each image captured by Boaz offers his audiences a rare composition of both nature and civilization in all their complexity. Originally a recording studio owner and music producer in New York City, Boaz became an avid aerial photographer almost entirely by accident after he won a “doors off” helicopter ride over Manhattan that opened his eyes to a new realm of experience. The oddity of what he saw sparked a deep fascination that led Boaz to return again and again to the cramped cockpits of such helicopters until he found in them a studio at 1000 feet above. Flying well away from the world below, Boaz holds an eye in the sky. With it, he surveys terrain and develops concepts in real time as colors and textures flood into sight during each ride. Working under the throbbing sounds of the propellers overhead, Boaz directs the pilot over radio and creates spontaneous images of calm amidst chaos. In speaking of his method, he explains, “I seek out sound in my photos; I look to find those symbiotic patterns and fast-changing colors that play together in rhythm, similar to the layers that make up a beat.” Through this unique process, Boaz discovers a synesthetic harmony in each photograph just as he would if he was visualizing music on a track. As a result, the 13 large-format dye sublimation prints of Hawaii, Israel, Arizona, California and Key West in this exhibition hold a lingering tranquility as they flow throughout the gallery. The exhibition’s invitational image “Desert Isle” shows the tides of an emerald green ocean washing over sunbeam yellow sands to form a vibrant ripple green that coalesces into an S-shaped coastline where distant row boats and sunbathers appear like ants. His visionary approach to expanding how audiences see the everyday is reminiscent of Andreas Gursky who did the same in Rhine II (1999) which captured the magnificence of the Rhine River with virtuoso ease. Gifted with a sight of the world top down, Boaz’s aerial photography evokes a cosmic awareness of humanity as a tiny dot in the universe which borders on the surreal. He credits his influences to be Joan Miro, Christopher Nolan, Andreas Gursky, Annie Leibowitz and Edward Burtynsky. Born in India with deep roots in Sri Lanka, Boaz moved from Chennai to the United States. He studied Psychology at Rutgers University, but it was there that he also took his first photography class. After graduation, he ran a successful recording studio in Soho. Then, as he returned to photography, he took multiple courses including digital printmaking at the International Center of Photography. In May 2019, Boaz was announced as the winner of the National Geographic Adventure photography contest for his piece “All The People”. For decades, Robin has exhibited a wide variety of photographers at the gallery but never her own work. As the show’s title denotes, “It’s About Time.” The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, January 23rd from 6pm to 8pm. The exhibit runs through March 17, 2019. While her photography spans five decades and multiple continents, Rice maintains a cohesive, candid voice that carries throughout all of her work. Observing the world around her in a cinematic way, she possesses an uncanny ability to recognize and capture moments of beauty and the spontaneity of the human spirit. By evoking a wonderstruck sensibility, Rice expresses a deep-rooted love for both people and landscapes using her distinct bohemian style. In this salon-style retrospective, Rice uses an “old school” approach and shoots with her Nikon on Tri-X film. When creating her art, she insists, “the camera has a mind of its own.” The scenes captured in her photography are unedited and thus born purely from the magic of the in-camera composition. In the invitational image, “Tree Farm, Long Lane, East Hampton, NY”, 1999, a naked woman wearing nothing but a large straw hat is captured from behind, centered between a long line of trees on either side, as she bikes down the lane. In another image, “Bubbles, Piazza Rondanini, Roma”, 1995, friends linger before a vine-covered building, extending their arms up in joyful wonder, catching bubbles descending from above. Receiving her first camera at the age of 11, she has since been an avid fine art photographer. After moving from Philadelphia to New York in 1976, Rice was immediately swept up in the electrifying, fast-paced art world of the city. In 1977, Discoworld Magazine hired her to photograph the opening night of Studio 54. After enjoying 23 years of success as a commercial photographer, she shifted her career to become a gallerist, opening The Robin Rice Gallery in 1990. Curating 175 shows, Robin developed her own “school” of artists, cultivating a keen eye for curating and in doing so enriching the aesthetic of her own fine art photography. Despite devoting much of her energy to the gallery, Rice has never stopped creating her own art, and has exhibited in several galleries nationally and abroad. Influenced by photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, who curated the art of others and exhibited his own work, Rice is ready to showcase her photography on her own turf. ABOUT: In her ninth solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery, veteran artist Patricia Heal documents her visual narrative of their enchanted home in upstate New York. Hidden within untouched forests lies Peabrook, a babbling brook running through the property. The classic architecture of the house is offset by uniquely quirky interiors designed by the English-born Patricia and her husband, Anthony Cotsifas, which generate an otherworldly existence within the estate. “Peabrook is my Neverland,” Heal states, in reference to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. “It is a fictional place often described as a metaphor for eternal childhood.” Heal hopes that, with just a visit to the gallery and a little imagination, you, too, can see Peabrook. Her use of the large format, now-extinct Polaroid film for her black and white photographs, and the warm soft colors found in many of the other pieces of the collection, contribute to the sense of antiquity and fantasy surrounding Peabrook. The whimsical subject matter, including mythical creatures and extensive taxidermy, complete the “magical” representation of Heal’s home that she strove to depict. The simply framed 4” x 5”, 5” x 7” and 8” x 10” photographs sit within large mattes, in keeping with the classical quality of her images. “I really wanted to work in film again, and this project seemed the right one to do it with,” says Heal, who lists Sarah Moon and André Kertesz as artistic inspirations. The dark and mysterious invitational image, “Willow”, depicts a portrait of a hooded woman, her downward gaze partially obstructed by the soft branches of a fern from the surrounding garden. The earth-toned image contains the unpredictable streaked effect of developed instant film. In another image, entitled “Sitting Room”, we see a positive image of a film negative. Most notable is the hanging rhinoceros head towering impressively over two antique sitting chairs...

ABOUT: Victoria Goldman’s twenty-year-long fascination with Tarot has created a series of photographs based on the imagery and the mythology behind the ancient Tarot cards. Each image in the collection is inspired by and named after one of the 22 major archetypes of the Tarot. While photographing and teaching yoga and meditation in India, Hawaii, and throughout Europe, Goldman always made sure to carry a Tarot deck in her backpack. She views Tarot as a tool for personal elevation, helping her direct her focus and better understand her psyche. The collection’s soft focus and figurative emphasis is reminiscent of the work of Francesca Woodman or Julia Margaret Cameron, whom Goldman cites as personal artistic inspirations. The concept behind the exhibition was long thought-out; while some pieces date as recently as two months prior to the exhibition opening, others date as far back as 1999 or 2000. Shot primarily with vintage Polaroid and film with a twin lens Rolleiflex camera, the dark, moody, mythological images recall a classical tone that mirrors the timelessness of the cards themselves. The invitational image, entitled “Wheel of Fortune”, depicts a young woman in a glittering gown, her backside facing the viewer and her body positioned to spin a large carnival wheel hidden in the darkness of the photograph. The high-contrast nature of the image abstracts the gown, morphing the glitter on the dress into drops of light that shine through the dark air. The slender young woman in “Fortune” can be found in several of the collection’s photographs, depicting not just Lady Luck, as in the invitational image, but also the Emperor, the Devil, and even the World...

ABOUT In this exhibition, Mindaugas Gabrenas invites us to reflect on the poetics of place through his lyrical and surrealist imagery. His hand-printed silver gelatin prints reveal abandoned regions, wild coasts and strange territories from Lithuania to Scotland to America. As a scientific innovator, he uses unique techniques and unconventional materials in order to create his whimsical, dream photos. In “Spinning The Wheel”, stars trace the sky in a curved motion and meet the water below creating a sense of the infinite. As Gabrenas explores and captures landscapes through very long exposures, he actually meditates and reflects on the world around him encouraging his viewers to imagine themselves within the landscapes and dream with him. In another image “Dream About an Empty House”, that was taken in Lithuania, we see a young girl from behind in a red polka dotted dress as she faces an abandoned home. Using his handmade camera he constructed by merging two cameras—a Kiev 88 and a Kodak Duaflex II. The viewfinder of the Duaflex serves as an additional filter on the lens of the Kiev 88, which is fixed to its body with several macro rings. Before shooting the film, he wraps it in black rye bread and waits several days for the mold to grow onto the film. The combination of these two techniques creates a sense of motion around the central figure. “Alternatives”, our invitational image, pulls us into Gabrenas’ world. The focused close-up and abstracted view of train tracks distorts a familiar shape into a strange and unusual form. The tracks lead you in the distance, a blurry city of New York. The ironic lack of human life in New York City conveys a mystifying sense of place. In “Something With a Head”, we’re taken to the Lithuanian seaside where silhouetted figures stand on sand dunes watching...
