Poland (Glider) (Illustration of Glacial Landscape Around Vintage Stamp, Pencil)
By Andrea Moreau
Located in Hudson, NY
Poland (Glider) by Andrea Moreau colored pencil and postage stamp on paper 22 x 30 inches 25.25 x 32.5 inches framed To create her mixed-media artworks, Andrea Moreau selects a postage stamp to serve as the starting point for a piece on paper, then “completes” the image with colored pencil. This artwork, "Poland (Glider)," centers on a stamp that depicts an aircraft flying above a glacial horizon. Building on the style and environment established by the stamp art, Moreau extended this scene across land and sea in vibrant blue pencil. A statement by the artist: My drawings function as personal interpretations of political or commercial propaganda. I begin with imagery found on postage stamps or printed advertisements and, using the visual logic and graphic language of the image, I attempt to tease out a larger framework from which to consider it. Finished pieces often incorporate printed matter and cultural detritus, which gives them an immediate and tactile connection to the world of objects. I am particularly interested in the postage stamp as a geographical artifact, and through my drawing process I attempt to learn something about a place by studying its official imagery and then creating a world beyond the borders of its fragmentary scenes. The finished drawings and paintings are a record of this study; they are a dialogue between the printed and the drawn, the official and the personal, the real and the imaginary. They are a metaphor for the way in which we conjure the places we hear about on the news and read about in books, using the tiniest pieces of information to construct a reality that most likely bears little resemblance to any actual place. Andrea Moreau’s mixed-media works, on the other hand, walk a tightrope between context and isolation. Moreau selects a postage stamp to serve as the starting point for a piece on paper, then “completes” the image with colored pencil. These stamps may become lost in a frenzy of Moreau’s mark-making, as with “Mexico (Flowers) #15,” or left comically obvious, like in “USA (Barbershop...

Chasmanthium Insignias: Abstract Encaustic Painting with Green, Earth Tones
By Allyson Levy
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract encaustic painting with a green, earth toned palette. Made with natural plant material (Northern Sea Oats) "Chasmanthium Insignias I" made by Allyson Levy in 2021 encaustic and plant material on wood panel, 24 x 24 x 1 inches Lightweight, hangs with one d-ring, Signed, verso This modern abstract encaustic painting by Allyson Levy is made with Northern Sea Oats and green encaustic, sealed with a layer of neutral wax on a wood panel. The artist begins by finding the organic material in her 4-acre garden in upstate New York which she then arranges and embeds with encaustic on a wooden panel. The brown, earth toned sea oats are laid in a linear pattern on a wood panel with a surface of green encaustic and then sealed with clear wax. The encaustic wraps around to the sides of the panel, revealing some bumps and downward drips, accumulated during the natural drying process. The piece is lightweight and hangs on one d-ring. About the artist and her work: After moving to the rural town of Stone Ridge, NY seventeen years ago and starting a 4-acre botanical garden with her husband, mixed media artist, Allyson Levy, has found endless inspiration in the plant kingdom that surrounds her. The garden itself, named “Hortus Conclusus”, consisting of thousands of rare plants and edibles, remains at the epicenter of Levy’s art making. A fascination with earth’s bounty is expressed with her works in encaustic. Assorted organic material such as leaves, seeds, branches, insect wings...

Snakish (Curvy Abstract Minimalist Encaustic Wall Sculpture in Black and White)
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract minimalist three-dimensional wall sculpture in black and white "Snakish II", made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022 hand-stitched paper, beeswax (encaustic) and thread 36 x 10 x 3 inches hangs with a small thread notch on back extremely lightweight, weighs no more than 1.5 lbs. Excellent condition and ready to hang This abstract minimalist three-dimensional wall sculpture was made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022. The playful motif of hand-stitched paper, layered with black and white acrylic paint and coated with encaustic, is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The winding segments of white and black encaustic layered paper are assembled in a curving, snake-like formation, which are then hand-sewn by the artist. The lightweight wall sculpture hangs with a small thread notch, installed by the artist on the back of the piece. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.Donise English has received numerous awards including a 2018 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting; the Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Purchase Prize from the “11th National Juried Exhibition” at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland; 1st Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts,” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut; the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Purchase Award for Sculpture, Del Mar College, Texas, Honorable Mention; and others. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Resume: EDUCATION Master of Fine Arts in Painting Bard College 1986 Bachelor of Science in Art History State University College at New Paltz 1977 Additional Study: New York Studio School (Drawing Marathons) Columbia University, School of Architecture Women’s Studio Workshop TEACHING Professor of Studio Art, Department of Art and Art History, Marist College, Poughkeepsie,NY Coordinator, Interior Design Program, Florence, Italy campus 1992-present AWARDS Finalist, “Saatchi Showdown” 2010 Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent, University of Bridgeport, CT 2000 Purchase Prize, “11th National Juried Exhibition” College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore 1999 First Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts ‘95” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, CT 1995 Joseph A. Abstract encaustic painting with dyed teal, indigo, beige, and white dyed fabrics "Blue Ochre & White Lies" made by Hudson Valley artist, Alaina Enslen, in 2022 Encaustic & dyed fabrics mounted on panel 16 x 20 inches, 17 x 21 inches framed Excellent condition, ready to hang Lightweight Signed, verso This abstract minimalist painting is made with repurposed pieces of found fabrics in complementary tones of teal, indigo, and beige on an encaustic white background. The fabrics, which are adhered to a light wood Birch panel and layered with a subtle layer of encaustic, are arranged in a whimsical motif that accentuates the spontaneous dyed patterns. The layers of fabric and encaustic create a textured, impasto surface. About the artist: Alaina Enslen expresses her artistic vision through repurposed fabrics infused with beeswax. The Cornwall-On-Hudson based artist collects pieces of textile that evoke memory, tradition, or experience like cherished worn heirlooms, discarded clothes, and religious garments, which are then assembled on panel in an abstract patchwork. Favoring fabrics with a neutral or subtle cool palette, she flattens and frays the material to explore color, form, and lines, reimaging used cloth...

What Endures (Colorful Abstract Mixed Media Painting in Blue, Multi-Color)
Located in Hudson, NY
Brightly colored abstract mixed media painting with a gradient grey-blue background and multi-color detail "What Endures" by Hudson Valley based artist, Gina Occhiogrosso, made in 2020 acrylic and oil on piece and sewn muslin 48 x 36 inches Signed Verso Gina Occhiogrosso expands the boundaries of painting as she explores a preoccupation with the materiality of painting itself. Wet acrylic is applied to a stretched muslin surface where biomorphic shapes are formed using a combination of neon and pastel palettes. What follows is a process of disassembly and realignment when the artist cuts and sutures the painted surfaces back together. The act of cutting leads to new forms, dynamic connections, and illusions of depth. Slightly raised stitched seams act as a geometric disrupter to create both linear and sculptural elements, suggesting ties that are fragile yet unified. Her process and choice of materials are a nod to the female tradition of needlework (both of her immigrant grandmothers were seamstresses) and to commonplace materials like cotton muslin, yarn and thread used to craft something truly fine. Extremely tactile in nature, the artist has perfected a technique to make paintings that are full of suggestive qualities abstraction can create, and that allows her to “explore anxiety, loss, humor and heroic femininity.” Gina Occhiogrosso’s national group exhibition experience includes group exhibitions at The Painting Center and The Tang Teaching Museum. She served on the arts faculty at the College of Saint Rose and was the previous gallery director for the Arts Center of the Capital Region. Artist Statement: In my work, the hallowed and often masculinized tradition of painting is subverted through the cutting and sewing together of painted surfaces. The act of cutting leads to new forms, dynamic connections and illusions of depth, and the seams disrupt colorful forms that are carefully rendered and then sutured together. Intention and chance fuel this process of alignment and repositioning. Spaces and forms interact ambiguously, seemingly in flux and in conversation. I compose through the application of wet color on a surface and through the process of disassembly and realignment. Throughout the paintings, slightly raised seams are made where freshly painted edges join, creating both linear and sculptural elements. The seams suggest ties that are tenuous yet sturdy, fragile yet unified. Bright colors, shifting shapes and the visibility of seams connect to notions of pattern, fashion, crafts, and the history of “women’s work.” The toughness and thinness of the fabric is a reminder of the tension inherent in that history.
