The geometric forms are made in a more painterly, gestural manner rather than with a hard edge. Paint is not heavily built up upon the surface but it certainly exhibits a tactile quality which is characteristic of the artist's aesthetic. English's work celebrates the quirky, unexpected qualities of shapes and colors. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Her most recent body of work focuses on relationships between color and space. Elements of symbolism, reminiscent of Gustav Klimt, decorate the composition with abstract markings and calligraphic gestural brushwork. Warm yellow and purple tones with hints of green radiate upwards into a background of white, recalling the awaking the nature during the beginning of spring. There is wire installed on the back for easy hanging. The painting’s sides are cleanly painted so additional framing is optional. Artist Statement: My paintings are very textural and built up slowly over long periods of time. The surface holds the memory of the painting’s development, all the time looking for clues for what will come next. I look for connections between the forms that develop. The artist explains that this painting is about "giving structure to something intangible, ephemeral, in-flux or conversely, revealing the dissolving of structure that has been.” As an abstract artist, Fintz has long been interested in the contrast of hard-edged planar geometry (circles, squares, hexagons) existing within an atmospheric field where shapes can float or hold the plane, in a space that appears expansive, transient and increasingly released from the canvas’s edge. A calculated use of opacity and transparency resulting from fluid washes of acrylic create an atmosphere where fragmented geometry becomes “a vocabulary of gestures”. This work merges white and faintly gold hard edge lines with gentle washes of blue and neutrals. Working in a space between planning and chance, Jeanette Fintz presents a series of paintings that fuse gestural and geometric abstraction. This body of work continues Fintz’s use of the circle, ellipse and hexagon; motifs that embody references to nature, architecture and the decorative arts. Jeanette Fintz is an established artist working in the Hudson Valley, NY. She has taught at the School of Design Strategies at Parsons the New School for Design, SUNY Purchase, and Pratt Institute, among other American universities. Artist Statement: My paintings evolve in a space between planning & chance, systems & spontaneity, conveying contradictions that I view as metaphors for maneuvering through “real “life. In this work I play a fairly high stakes game of improvisation around a motif. Using a working method akin to jazz, I counterpoint systematically repeated elliptical shapes against gestural pours & drips and something unexpected emerges. I am drawn to create complexity, and challenged to unify multiple layers through the physicality of the paint, which fuses & knits together, as well as, ultimately, through the power of color to stabilize & resolve. The ellipse, which is hypnotic & spatial in repetition, & monumental, but not static as a shape unto itself, embodies references to nature and to the decorative arts which are both alluded to in the paintings. (The egg, the mirror, the vulva, or the shield.) Dynamic visual rhythms, in these pieces, the momentum of the repetitive ellipse, are typical of my work and help to maintain order within complexity. Their sources for me are both musical, notably the poly-rhythms of Latin jazz, Brazilian & East Indian music, and are also derived from the decorative arts, particularly textiles. The latter have been a source of excitement, often contributing a playful aspect to the paintings. I intentionally disturb the regularity of pattern, encouraging discordance & uniqueness, and then bring it back home after finding another by - way to work things through. Color is my most intuitive source of inspiration, connecting me to nature; It is also, ironically, my most passionately calculated element. In the primal struggle among sometimes apparently random components, subtlely modulated color clarifies purpose, builds context, and holds the structure together. The intuitive rhythmic order of Jeanette’s paintings prior to 2009 which featured repetitive lines, circles and ellipses clashing with fluid gestural streams of color have given way fully in the new work to a given crystalline geometric substructure that unifies all visual events. This work embraces and employs the Oneness found in sacred geometry as the underpinning for improvised pathways that give each work its uniqueness. Shapes that are found have a “role” to play, to riff off some of Jeanette’s series titles. The earlier pieces acknowledge through the unexpected visual event, the imperfection of the human condition while the newer geometries strive for the expression of spiritual wholeness and connection. About the artist: Jeanette Fintz is an abstract painter, who resides and paints in Hudson, NY. She is also an arts writer and independent curator. The intermix of being a native New Yorker and now, happily, a resident of the lush Hudson River Valley is evident in her work, which combines an urban edginess with the lyrical influences of her natural surroundings. Ms. Fintz was born in Brooklyn NY, educated at Queens College, The New York Studio School and Boston University. Her personal amalgam of NY School formalist principles, and love of natural light and color was initially forged during her summer at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture where she painted from the Maine landscape. Ms. Fintz lived and worked in the artist communities of Tribeca and Williamsburg, exhibiting regularly in NYC. Jeanette in part, credits the importance of natural light for her decision to transplant home and studio to Surprise. Ms Fintz has filtered nature through her urban sensibility, stretching color motifs towards the heightened and intensified palette often found in the realms of design and fashion. Her pieces have a rhythmic impact stemming both from her enjoyment of jazz and poly-rhythms of Brazilian and Indian origin, which she also sees displayed in the visual rhythms found in textiles and Islamic tile patterns. Jeanette’s involvement with these resources was enhanced by sabbatical travel to Spain’s Andalusia Region (2005 & 2009) to investigate patterning systems found in Moorish tiles and architecture, and to Turkey (2013), where she focused on the Iznik, Byzantine and Greco-Roman tiles and frescoes. Jeanette also had immersed herself in textile patterns and Ikat designs during her yearlong sojourn in Malaysia, where she was founding faculty in a new Parsons School of Design affiliate in Kuala Lumpur (1996-97). The artist's work is inspired by patterns found in nature such as tree rings, rock lines, ethereal horizons, or water ripples. It appears as though a light source is originating behind the panel, glowing softly in a pale, dreamy green palette. This unique surface spreads all the way to the very edge of each panel. The 2 inch deep sides are cleanly painted white for a seamless finish. These panels hang flush to the wall by resting on two nails on either side of the panel, and can be arranged in any number of ways, highlighting the work's sculptural element. Artist's Statement: My paintings merge the detailed textures and colors found in the natural world with the linear and geometric patterns visible in industrial and architectural structures. The interplay of these elements drives the work and provides a platform for constant change and narrative. By simultaneously layering and removing paint with rags instead of brushes, my hand is directly involved with the process. Each piece contains multiple panels that evoke a nuanced and evolving universe. Ginny Fox builds up each non-representational piece with overlapping streaks of paint that frequently span two or three panels. Working with rags instead of brushes, Fox’s hand moves along parallel paths, emergent colors cascading gently towards the edges of the composition's plane. All downtown Bogotá, south Bogotá and some sections of the north of the city are visible facing west, making it a popular destination for watching the sun set over the city. Bill Sullivan expertly paints wispy clouds that settle down around the mountain's peak. About the work by John Ashbery: With only a tinge of irony, Bill Sullivan makes new the vast spaces and swooning optimism of nineteeth-century Luminist painting. Reaffirming the contemplation of nature as its own reward, he also sets new tasks for painting and undertakes them with compelling eagerness. While there has been a tendency among some contemporary artists to present a revisionist view of the "great outdoors" of nineteenth-century landscape painters, Sullivan has no satirical agenda. After spending several years in South America amid the landscapes that attracted Frederic Edwin Church and Martin Heade, among others, he refined and strengthened this awesome imagery after returning to New York. A certain surreality floats though these vaporous visions of Columbia, though this may just be the result of Sullivan's careful documentation of scenes that looked unreal to begin with. About the Artist: Sullivan attended Silvermine College and earned an M.F.A. from The University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with Fairfield Porter, Neil Welliver, Jane Freilicher, John Button and Rudy Burckhardt. He also studied privately with Josef and Annie Albers. In the late 1960s, Sullivan joined Bowery Gallery, an artist-run gallery that was dedicatedto figurative art. Later, when the Alliance of Figurative Artists was starting, Sullivan organized weekly panels and discussions at The Educational Alliance. Sullivan's first solo show at Bowery Gallery in 1970 included paintings depicting people, New York cityscapes and still lifes. After this show, Sullivan developed an interest in landscape painting. New York City, the Hudson River and Manhattan's West Side highway became his main subjects. He had several shows of these paintings at Bowery Gallery and continued to paint the Hudson River until the end of his life. At one of these shows he met art collector G. W. Einstein, who became his friend and represented him for many years. Sullivan had his first solo show at G. W. Einstein Company in 1978. In 1977, Sullivan met Colombian writer Jaime Manrique; they traveled to Colombia, where Bill painted the places that Frederick Edwin Church and Martin Johnson Heade had painted in the 1850s. In Colombia he had a solo show in the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art in 1978. The years following his return from South America was the period when Sullivan's work was most in display in New York City. Sullivan remained in New York City until 2001 where he had several solo shows. In 2002, he settled in Hudson, New York, where his two nineteenth-century heroes, Frederick Church and Sanford Robinson Gifford, had lived. He painted many of the sites Church and Gifford rendered on canvas. Painting daily, the artist drives throughout the upstate New York, stopping to observe and paint 'en plain air' whenever and wherever a landscape strikes him. Orlyk prefers to leave his canvases unframed to reveal the exposed linen which are nailed to sturdy homasote boards for easy installation. This painting is a perfect example of Orlyk's impressionistic aesthetic. Here, the artist captures a quaint country landscape in a range of warm, golden tones. Orlyk's signature use of soft yellows creates a gently luminous atmosphere. The scene is made with gestural strokes of paint that culminate onto a textured, impasto surface. ABOUT In this exhibition, Mindaugas Gabrenas invites us to reflect on the poetics of place through his lyrical and surrealist imagery. His hand-printed silver gelatin prints reveal abandoned regions, wild coasts and strange territories from Lithuania to Scotland to America. As a scientific innovator, he uses unique techniques and unconventional materials in order to create his whimsical, dream photos. In “Spinning The Wheel”, stars trace the sky in a curved motion and meet the water below creating a sense of the infinite. As Gabrenas explores and captures landscapes through very long exposures, he actually meditates and reflects on the world around him encouraging his viewers to imagine themselves within the landscapes and dream with him. In another image “Dream About an Empty House”, that was taken in Lithuania, we see a young girl from behind in a red polka dotted dress as she faces an abandoned home. Using his handmade camera he constructed by merging two cameras—a Kiev 88 and a Kodak Duaflex II. The viewfinder of the Duaflex serves as an additional filter on the lens of the Kiev 88, which is fixed to its body with several macro rings. Before shooting the film, he wraps it in black rye bread and waits several days for the mold to grow onto the film. The combination of these two techniques creates a sense of motion around the central figure. “Alternatives”, our invitational image, pulls us into Gabrenas’ world. The focused close-up and abstracted view of train tracks distorts a familiar shape into a strange and unusual form. The tracks lead you in the distance, a blurry city of New York. The ironic lack of human life in New York City conveys a mystifying sense of place. In “Something With a Head”, we’re taken to the Lithuanian seaside where silhouetted figures stand on sand dunes watching the central figure jumping off into the distance. This image is part of his “Dreamscapes”; a series of “dream projections” where the artist uses a light-leaking camera called Kiev 88 and expired Svema 64 film to give the photography a dusty and blurry quality. Born in Lithuania, he has been influenced by a myriad of artists’ techniques including the graceful elegance of Masao Yamamoto and the intricate compositions of Michael Kenna. However, Henri Cartier Bresson has perhaps had the greatest influence on Gabrenas’ photographic process and the patience it entails. Gabrenas has won numerous awards for his photography, including Black & White Magazine Portfolio Contest Winner, Audience Award Winner in SoHo Photo Gallery, Photo Democracy Award Winner, Foto filmic'13 Portfolio Award Winner, Tera Bella Media'13 2nd Place Winner. He has also been published in various publications including 'Black & White Magazine', ‘L’Oeil de la Photographie', ‘Adore Noir Magazine’, ’PH Magazine’, 'Foto blur', ‘Dodho Magazine’, ’Dahse', 'Shots', ‘DOC!’, ‘Monovisions’, and ‘Klassik Magazine’. The print is part of their 'Mar: Adrift on the Hourglass Sea' series which features deserted landscapes in outer space. In this image, a mysterious and otherworldly mechanism floats through the Martian landscape. It is unknown who or what is operating it. With this imagery, the artists entice an imaginative narrative where the viewer is left to conjure up their own story. About the series: "Mars: Adrift on the Hourglass Sea" is Kahn and Selesnick’s first project to feature a female protagonist; a woman finds herself alone in a wasteland that appears to be Mars. It is uncertain how she arrived in this place, via spacecraft, through a fold in the space-time continuum or perhaps the landscape is a mental projection. Either way, it is clear that she has escaped an unnamed catastrophe on Earth. In a series of hallucinatory episodes she simultaneously explores the planet and builds a mock-life for herself from a combination of high-tech and stone-age materials. Mars is revealed to have ruined artifacts and monuments from a previous, or perhaps future, civilization. The remains of massive stone listening devices are littered about the landscape, leading us to wonder: is this a colony that has collapsed and lost touch with earth? How did its occupants become stranded? Or are these the nocturnal imaginings of a post-apocalyptic survivor? Little Blue, 2020 Encaustic & collage on thin edged board 12" X 12" This abstract geometric composition on wooden board features a playful geometric motif that is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The geometric forms are made in a more painterly, gestural manner rather than with a hard edge. Paint is not heavily built up upon the surface but it certainly exhibits a tactile quality which is characteristic of the artist's aesthetic. English's work celebrates the quirky, unexpected qualities of shapes and colors. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Impressionistic landscape painting of the Hudson River during the wintertime in tones of grey, white, slate, blue, dark brown and green Oil on linen, 22 x 28 inches John Kelly approaches the Hudson Valley landscape with the eye of an architect and the hand of an impressionist. With intense attention paid to form and light, Kelly nevertheless manages to abstract the landscape just slightly, breaking earth, sky, and atmosphere down to their most elemental qualities. In this painting, a body of water, solidified into ice, stretches toward a murky treeline. The painting is composed primarily in a palette of pale blue, gray, and pink, with white, dark green, and gray accents. About the artist: Hudson Valley based painter John Kelly received his education from the Art Institute of Boston and Buffalo State. He has been exhibiting around the northeastern United States since the 1970s. Inspired by close observations of the natural world and encounters with still moments that give us pause. Lines, shapes and colors encountered in nature, reveal the cycles of decay and regeneration that are life’s constant state of change. The work has a quiet, meditative quality. The subject is portrayed in a manner true to their existence in a specific time and place and selected based on considerations of visual relationships to formal elements of painting. Aspects of photo realism, hard edge and color field techniques are utilized to isolate the uniqueness of the subject’s detail, as well as emphasize flatness and illusion of depth within the two-dimensional space of the painting. About the artist: Frank DiPietro was born and raised in Scranton PA. He received a Bachelor of Art from Bloomsburg University in 1997, majoring in both Painting and Ceramics with a minor in Art History. In 2000 he earned a degree in Art Education from Moore College of Art and Design while continuing his studies in painting. Frank lived in Philadelphia for twelve years painting and teaching at several museums, art centers and schools in the region. In 2010 he and his family moved to Chester County PA, where he currently resides. Frank currently teaches painting classes and workshops at the Delaware Art Museum and Longwood Gardens...
