About the Item

Framed flower still life photograph of a pale pink peony on a solid black background “Untitled 47” by Chad Kleitsch, this image is part of the artist’s “Botanical Mind” series began in 2006 Edition 1 of 25, All editions are printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Matte Paper with Epson archival quality inks 30 x 30 inches unframed 39 x 39 inches in an 8-ply mat and white painted Larson Juhl frame with Tru Vue Museum Glass (UV protection and anti-reflective) Signed, lower right Excellent condition, ready to hang Photographer Chad Kleitsch embarked on the extensive photo essay called “Botanical Mind” exactly 20 years ago. Kleitsch was at the forefront of experimentation with flatbed scanners as this technology became more widely available and affordable in the late 90’s. The collection and documentation of hundreds of blossoms became his focus using this new approach. He produced a series where deeply hued petals animate against an opaque, velvety, black background. Alternately, the series of white background flowers coax transparency and luminosity, exposing the fragile vulnerability of each stem. The artist makes all of his own prints on a large format, Epson inkjet printer on matte 100% cotton rag Hahnemuhle paper. Originally from New Jersey, Kleitsch earned his BA in Photograph from Bard College in 1991 and currently keeps his studio in Rhinecliff, NY. The image is also available in the following sizes: 10 x 10 inch (17 x 11 paper size) - $900, unframed 18 x 18 inch (24 x 20 paper size) - $2,200, unframed 40 x 40 inch (40 x 40 paper size) - $4,500 unframed and unmounted 48 x 48 inch (48 x 48 paper size) - $5,200 unframed and unmounted 48 x 60 inch (48 x 60 paper size) - $5,800 unframed and unmounted 60 x 60 inch (60 x 60 paper size) - $6,500 unframed and unmounted *inquire within for additional mounting and framing options* Scanography Artist Statement: I began using a scanner as a camera in 1997 while living at a Zen monastery and began this botanical series in 2001. Using the scanner as the camera, is a rediscovery of image making. It's reminiscent or mirrors, in both process and aesthetics, the historic images of those first photograms and cyanotypes. Compare it with William Henry Fox Talbot’s 1840 photogram of a Byron poem or the cyanotypes of Anna Atkins. (see below) This photographic process has grown in use over the past decade and a half and has been dubbed “scanography”. It’s most prevalent use is in the recording of botanical objects, which to me is not surprising. For some primordial reason when a new image making process or technique is created we innocently throw nature onto its surface, as some kind of ongoing test. Perhaps looking to see if it can match our own perceptual abilities and/or move beyond it. Scanography, to my estimation has come the closest to fulfilling this goal. To create these images, I use the digital flatbed scanner as a camera and treat the objects as if it were film. In some images (the white background) the object is backlit during the scanning process just as a sheet of film or a slide would be. What results is a translucent image of the object. Something similar to the experience of viewing stain glass windows. To articulate the detail, character, and topography of each individual subject, Rather than a still life or a photographic documentation, through this process, are transformed into portraits. In a sense it depicts their humanity. CK 2012 “Botanical Mind” Artist Statement: "Spring is in the frozen branches, buried beneath three feet of snow." Dogen Zenji, 13th Century Many years ago I lived near a very large garden. I would see them all in their unique stages of life. They were always open, innocent and beautiful. These are portraits of beings whose life is brief and whose silence and perfection are wondrous. CK 2004
