Antique Spelter Marly Rearing Horses & Grooms Sculptures after Guillaume Coustou
By Guillaume Coustou
Located in Topeka, KS
Fabulous antique replica spelter detailed sculptures of the Marly rearing horse and groom original stone sculptures by Guillaume Coustou. These replica sculptures were extremely popular in the Victorian era and were done by many artists. This pair is in wonderful antique condition with no outstanding flaws we have detected. Please see photos, circa late 19th century.
I knew I needed these to offer to you the moment I saw them. This lovely pair of antique Victorian highly detailed sculptures of the famed Marly rearing horse and groom sculptures are after the stone originals by Guillaume Coustou and will look amazing on your mantle, or wherever you decide. These small replica sculptures were done by many different artists in the late 19th century and were all the rage. Most were never signed but show the original signature of Coustou on the base, as do these. This handsome pair are cast in spelter, an alloy of which zinc is the main constituent, and have an exquisite age patina. They are mounted on their original black painted wood bases. Each sculpture is similar but different.
The original stone Marly horse sculptures...

There he is… out in the distance standing on the cliffs edge, rearing with a colossal power that only a wild stallion exudes… Thrusting his hooves at the setting sun as if to say, “this is MY mountain, MY meadows, and MY heard.” He commands attention, he is dignified, and he is EXQUISITE. We have a marvelous cast metal bronze tone stylized rearing horse standing on a beautiful black marble base to offer to you. Attributed to C. Jere (a.k.a.) Curtis Jere which is not a single artist but is a nom-de-plume for a group of artists working for Artisan House and well known for their phenomenal jewelry, metal sculptures, and collectibles. And this abstract rearing horse is a perfect example of their remarkable pieces!! Unlike other rearing horse sculptures, this one has a single back and front leg… it appears to have been cast this way and we think he is extraordinary. This sculpture will look fabulous on your desk, coffee table, or on a shelf in any room of your home. And though it’s modern, it will be beautiful anywhere you want to add a little abstract flair. This is just the sculpture you’ve been looking for!
Artisan House artists included founders Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels and Curtis Jere is a combination of their names. Before founding Artisan House these two friends and brothers-in-law had built a costume jewelry business which sold under the names of Renoir and Matisse, two well-known names of mid-20th century costume jewelry. During the mid-20th century, the C. Jere sculptures, and metal work were distributed by Raymor, a well-known name in Mid Century collectibles, and sold at Gump’s in San Francisco and other upscale retail establishments. Jerry Fels died 11...

Well, what have we here? A lovely lady and her beautiful Borzoi on an “Afternoon Stroll.” This is a fabulous statue titled “Afternoon Stroll” which was created by famed artist Alexsander Danel and produced by Austin Productions. Some say her dog is a Borzoi which is a Russian Wolfhound while others say it is a greyhound… but since the Borzoi is a descendant from the Arabian greyhound, you can call it whichever you prefer!! He stands proud and poised on a black rectangular base as she leans over his backside softly stroking his shoulders while dressed to the T in her fabulous black mink bolero...

Oh “dear,” what have we here???? We have a gorgeous vintage caramel colored ceramic “deer” to offer to you!! This wonderful ceramic piece was made by Jaru California Pottery in 1975. It is mid-century modern to modern in style with a bit of Art Deco Revival thrown in, but it will blend beautifully with almost ANY décor. It would be a lovely centerpiece on a dining table or surrounded by plants and foliage on a table in a sunroom. She has a peaceful aura as she lays calmly in her restful position awaiting her chance to be placed on the perfect shelf, tabletop, or display cabinet in your home.
Jaru Art Products started in 1948 after founders Jack and Ruth Hirsch met, began a relationship, and eventually married. Their business, Jaru Art Products, was formed from the combination of the first two letters of their names, Jack, and Ruth. Later on, Jaru began to sell some of the works they created themselves, together with the help they got from other recruited artists. Their business became successful in the early 50’s and has been passed on several times across generations. Today, pottery pieces bearing the Jaru signature are considered of high value and sought after by collectors.
