Barque de Peche en Mer
Fishing Boat at Sea
Signed and dated “Henry Moret 1912” (lower left)
Oil on canvas
A beautiful gestural composition imbued with the sublime beauty of the open sea, this oil on canvas by Impressionist Henry Moret showcases the artist's deft use of color and texture. One of the most celebrated painters of the Pont-Aven School, Moret’s lasting reputation is tied to his talent for capturing the bright skies, lively waterways and the diverse coastline of northern France. With a mastery of plein air composition and a deep appreciation for the natural world, Moret's Barque de Peche en Mer renders a fishing boat navigating through the ocean. Moret creates a visceral sense of the vitality of the water and the enormity of the open skies. The artist captures the vigorous energy of the sea with a profusion of green and blue hues applied with a thick impasto. Small yet mighty against the infinite backdrop, Moret's fishing boat forges ahead.
Henry Moret was born in Cherbourg in 1856, though little else is known about his early life. He entered military service as a young man in 1875, and it was during that period when Moret discovered the beauty of France’s northern coasts, particularly those of Normandy and Brittany. After his tour ended, he embarked on his artistic career, completing his formal education at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Leon Gérôme, and later, from about 1880, under Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian.
He exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1880, submitting a landscape of the coast of Brittany. During his time in Paris, he frequently traveled to Brittany to paint the region he so loved. In 1888, he more firmly established himself in Pont-Aven, a town whose center had become an artistic refuge for artists such as the great Paul Gauguin, Ernest Ponthier de Chamaillard, Emile Jourdan and others. Under Gauguin's influence, he briefly explored the concept of Symbolism in his works, but after Gauguin left Pont-Aven in 1891, Moret returned to his Impressionist roots. He formed a relationship with the famed dealer Durand-Ruel in 1895, and his career was officially launched. Today, his works can be found in important museums including the Manchester Art Gallery, the State Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg), the National Gallery of Art (Washington DC) and others.

This enchanting work by Dutch artist, A.E. Herrmann depicts an exotic scene in Bali. In this magnificent painting depicting four Balinese women packing baskets, a vivid background is painted so that it is vibrant with the tropical colors of Indonesia. The stunning melon-hued temple becomes a focus in the painting and evokes a serene and mesmerizing scene of a faraway land.

Not only a famous old New Orleans mansion on Prytania Street, but now an institution dear to the hearts of many New Orleanians -- an all-girl school that goes back over a hundred years. This is a large, nicely-framed oil on canvas of the main building of the Louise S. McGehee school by David Dillard, who came out of the famous Newcomb College art program that goes back to the Woodwards, Newcomb Pottery and the southern art renaissance. The provenance is the Jean Bragg Gallery, the preeminent gallery while in existence for traditional New Orleans art...

Dimanche au champ de course (Deauville)
(Sunday at the Racetrack)
Signed “H. Claude Pissarro” (lower left)
Pastel on card
French artist Hugues Claude Pissarro offers a unique perspective of the racetrack in Deauville in this exceptional pastel. The spectators are as much his subject as the sport in this artistic tribute to a leisurely Sunday at the tracks. Following the impressionist tradition of his father and grandfather before him, Pissarro infuses this pastel with dynamic light and vibrant colors. Entitled Dimanche au Champ de Course (Deauville), it showcases the artist's highly distinctive and sophisticated style.
Hailing from a long lineage of painters, Pissarro's artistic talents were cultivated at an early age. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14 and later studied in Paris at the École du Louvre and École Normale Supérieure. A 1959 White House commission to paint the portrait of President...

Almond Trees in Spring

This Neo-Impressionist landscape by the French artist Achille Laugé captures an orchard in late spring in his celebrated, highly modern style. The work displays a thick impasto thanks to the artist's distinctive technique of applying his paint in quick dabs, a characteristic of his later works. One of the foremost painters of the Post-Impressionist period, Laugé’s works are beloved for his sensitivity to light, shade and tone, and his mastery of medium is clearly on display in Almond Trees...

Holy Cross Batture
By Gina Phillips
Located in New Orleans, LA
CROW VALLEY JFG EXHIBITION STATEMENT:
Last summer, I was awarded a residency based in Briant, a small village located in the Brionnais region of France. I spent a week in Paris before the residency began. I filled my days visiting museums, paying close attention to Impressionist, Post-Impressionist/Synthetist masterpieces; especially certain works by Paul Gauguin and Paul Serusier.
I rented a car and drove out of Paris, headed to Briant. My goal was to spend my time in Brionnais painting landscapes, en plein air. I had never driven in a foreign country before, so I was a bit nervous at first. But after a couple of hours, I veered off onto the back roads and was awestruck by the seemingly never-ending, breathtaking vistas. There were amazing compositions to be had just about any direction I looked. Before long, I was feeling one with the tiny Citroen I was driving, and I was thoroughly enjoying zipping around the hilly landscapes dotted with fluffy white Charolais cattle, stone fences and villages anchored by Romanesque churches.
I quickly settled into a routine; waking early, drinking tea with Julie (founder of the residency, Incident res), and then heading out to drive around the nearby countryside to find a spot to paint. It had been a few years since I painted landscapes from observation, and I was worried I might be a little rusty. But as soon as I started painting, I felt a meditative attunement in the process of capturing the scenes before me.
I was surprised to find striking similarities between the farmland of Brionnais and the farmland surrounding my Central Kentucky home; the rolling hills, pastures divided by stone fencing and gravel lanes lined with gnarly trees growing into barbed wire fencerows.
Last fall, I went home to Madison County, Kentucky and continued the series. This was a bittersweet time for me, because my grandfather, Sterling Moberly, was in failing health. Pawpaw and I were motorcycle riding buddies when I was in my early twenties. He would chart our course, traversing miles of backroads. The landscape was characterized by big black tobacco barns...

Plaquemine
By Errol Barron
Located in New Orleans, LA
Framed sized is 16 x 20 inches. Framed in a white oak frame.
In any landscape there are places and objects of quiet monumentality so ingrained into the scene that they are nearly invisible or regarded only as ordinary or outdated artifacts of the past. Some are small in scale, and some suggest a kind of architectural grandeur mixed with a pathos stemming from their obsolete utility and the evidence they bear of the passage of time. Some, like the abandoned oil rigs in and around the Gulf of Mexico, are poignant reminders of environmental optimism and tragedy.
Primarily encountered on trips around our region, stretching up as far as the delta of northwestern Mississippi and southeastern Arkansas and as far south as the mouth of the Mississippi, these places and objects evoked the curiosity and affection, which prompted this show. The paintings, the result of a labor-intensive technique requiring many layers of color, are intimately sized though they often deal with subjects of great scale.
Trained as an architect and a practicing architect until 2016, Barron now works primarily as a painter. For many years he has taught at the Tulane University School of Architecture and is a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects. In 2012, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Louisiana Architects Association and in 1995 was awarded the prestigious Gabriel Prize from the Western European Architecture Foundation.
