Adam and Steve, Ode to Hugo van der Goes' The Fall of Man
By E2 - Kleinveld & Julien
Located in New Orleans, LA
Edition 1 of 5, 2 APs Framing is an additional $420. Photography and acting are kindred spirits in the ongoing series by E2 - Kleinveld & Julien, entitled In Empathy We Trust. The project presents viewers with re-imagined iconic images from the history of art. The collaborators re-envision the work of old master painters beginning with the Flemish Primitives and spanning nearly 600 years. With subjects enacting roles with varied representations of race, age, and sexual orientation, E2’s revisionist Art History works by artists such as van Eyck, Botticelli, Raphael, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fragonard, Manet and Whistler. Inspired by the original paintings, E2 hopes to “jar viewers” into questioning their own perceptions. They invite viewers to see these images, and indeed the world anew, using humor, wit and playfulness. In addition, they hope that the viewers will see how stereotypes can lead to prejudice and discrimination. The collaboration began in 2010, after completing work on the traveling exhibition and book project, Before (During) After: Louisiana Photographers Respond to Hurricane Katrina. This natural and man-made disaster brought social inequities in Louisiana into vivid focus. Conversations between Kleinveld and Julien revealed their mutual interest in issues of social justice. E2 has been exhibited internationally in institutions such as: Royal Academy of Art (London), Photoville (New York), Gemeentemuseum (The Hague), Palazzo Fortuny (Venice), Museum Castelvecchio (Verona), Galerie SIRIUS (Tokyo), New Orleans Museum of Art and Ogden Museum of Southern Art (New Orleans). The duo is represented by JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY, New Orleans and their work appears in numerous public and private collections, including: Benetton Collection (Treviso, Italy), Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Trento, Italy), Hilliard University Art Museum (Lafayette, LA) and The Marks Collection (Houston). Elizabeth Kleinveld is an artist and photographer from New Orleans, now based in Amsterdam, who takes her inspiration from Paul Outerbridge...

Cuatro Arcos
By Victoria Montoro Zamorano
Located in New Orleans, LA
For Victoria Montoro Zamorano, the art of seeing consists not in actively looking for the striking or unusual, but in being ever open and receptive to see the world with new eyes. This unguarded, spontaneous approach gives her images a quality of abstract realism that turns undulating sand dunes into a woman’s prone body, and equally captures the emotional content of a crumbling façade or an old woman’s face. An avid world traveler. Cuban born Zamorano has a special sensibility for people and places off the beaten path. Having no preconceived notions of what a photograph should be, Zamorano’s instinctual approach has led her to the poignant remains of the Jewish synagogues...

Cosmic Vibrations
By Alia Ali
Located in New Orleans, LA
Archival pigment print, mounted, UV laminated, frame upholstered by the artist Edition of 5 + 2 AP Alia Ali ( عاليه علي ) is a Yemeni-Bosnian-US multi-media artist. A child of migrant linguists, Ali has traveled to sixty-seven countries, lived in and between seven, and grown up among five languages. Her migrations have led her to process the world through interactive experiences and the belief that the damage of translation and interpretation of written language has dis-served particular communities, resulting in the threat of their exclusion, rather than a means of understanding. As an artist who exists on the borders of identifying as West Asian, Eastern European, a United States citizen, queer, culturally Muslim yet spiritually independent, her work explores cultural binaries, challenges culturally sanctioned oppression, and confronts conflicted notions of gender, politics, media, and citizenship. Working between photography, video, and installation, Ali’s work addresses the politicization of the body, histories of colonization, imperialism, sexism, and racism through projects that take pattern and textile as their primary motif. Textile, in particular, has been a constant in Ali’s practice. Her strong belief that textile is significant to all of us, reminds us that we are born into it, we sleep in it, we eat on it, we define ourselves by it, we shield ourselves with it, and eventually, we die in it. While it unites us, it also divides us physically and symbolically. Her work broadens into immersive installations utilizing light, pattern, and textile to move past language and offer an expansive, experiential understanding of self, culture, and nation. Alia Ali’s work has been featured in the Financial Times, Le Monde, Vogue Arabia...

Sennen
Located in New Orleans, LA
Sennen is a new study, and the first in a series of works based around a loose grid of interlocking circular forms. This impression is #20 in an edition of 24. The work takes on some of the language of artists such as Sonia Delaunay and Sarah Morris, who both use flat geometric grids as the basis for many of their studies. I’ve taken that idea and built it up into something more complex and textured, that I hope is redolent of a landscape, or perhaps just a dreamlike imagining of a landscape, filtered as ever through the digital, and its ability to layer and distort form. Chuck Elliott (b. 1967, Camberwell, London) is a pioneer of digitally generated art. He claims to have used the first Apple Macintosh...

XGEN 2
Located in New Orleans, LA
XGen 2 / chromatic variation 5 is taken from a new set of drawings designed to explore, and riff on, the energy contained within a simple X form. I hope the edition captures some of the kinetic energy and life contained within the essence of the original form too. This is impression #23, a ten color pigment print on Hahnemuhle 340 gsm photo paper. The study builds on a simple X shaped grid that generates the underlying drawing, which I overlaid with experimental mark making, building up layers of texture and colour to work the piece up into something a little more painterly than many of my previous editions have been. I like the idea that the ink seems quite fluid, but also sits on a fairly rigid geometric grid. That combination would be hard to achieve off system I think, and as ever, I really enjoy seeing if I can make the digital speak with a little more soul, and just generally feel more haptic than might otherwise be the case. A lot of the joy, for me, is in the unexpected overlaps and misalignments in the final drawings. I feel there’s something of Sean Scully’s style here too, I’m drawn to his works, but always with a slight scepticism. I tend to feel there’s something a little suspect about that bravura level of underworking, but really I think I’m just envious of the raw confidence he brings to his mark making! Chuck Elliott (b. 1967, Camberwell, London) is a pioneer of digitally generated art. He claims to have used the first Apple Macintosh...
