He visited the Academy of Fine Arts and took painting lessons from Andreas Schelfhout. Advised by his teacher, he travelled through Belgium, Germany and Switzerland.

He was a student of Bartholomäus van Hove, Wijnand Nuijen and Andreas Schelfhout. Between 1841 and 1848 Leickert worked and lived in The Hague and from 1849 to 1883 in Amsterdam.
