Iggy Pop photograph Detroit 1968 (Leni Sinclair)
By Leni Sinclair
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Iggy Pop by Leni Sinclair One of the most iconic images ever taken of Iggy Pop, this truly one of a kind photograph was shot by legendary Detroit photographer Leni Sinclair - 2016's Kresge Foundation's Eminent Artist of 2016 (See The Guardian UK Photo Section, Jan. 28, 2016). This photo is featured in the publication 'Rock in Fashion by John Varvatos' as well as two acclaimed rock documentary's: Gimme Danger and 'Danny Says. Medium: Archival Inkjet Print Dimensions: 11 x 14 inches Hand signed, titled & dated in ink on the lower margins by Sinclair Very good overall condition Obtained directly from artist. Seller is an authorized dealer rep of Sinclair. About Leni Sinclair A recognized leader of the 1960s-70s counter cultural movement in Detroit and a trusted documenter of the rock n’ roll scene of that same era, Leni Sinclair is known for her vivid photographs which captured faithfully the raw drama that unfolded before her lens. But she may be best known for capturing the raucous rock n’ roll scene of that era, including photographs of such rock legends as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, and jazz icons such as Miles Davis and Sun Ra. Focusing her lens on musicians and fellow activists from nightclubs to festivals to street demonstrations, Sinclair captured a pivotal era in American history when art and politics intertwined. Some of her photos – including shots of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane and of Nigeria’s rebel music star Fela Kuti – are among the most widely known of their subjects. What seems, at first glance, to be candid scenes featuring musicians, activists, party goers and demonstrators, read together as a more powerful story: that of an American society where art and politics were inextricably intertwined. Of recent notoriety Sinclair was exhibited at Detroit’s MOCAD (Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit) as part of her first major U.S. solo museum exhibition, “Moto City Underground”. The 80-year-old artist, author and social justice organizer still lives in Detroit, where she married politically active poet and jazz critic John Sinclair in 1965 at a Cass Avenue church. Three years later they and a friend started the White Panther Party. __ Iggy Pop, the designated "Godfather of Punk", is an American singer, songwriter, musician, producer and actor. He was the vocalist of influential proto-punk band the Stooges, who reunited in 2003, and is well known for his outrageous and unpredictable stage antics. Iggy Pop's music has encompassed a number of styles over the course of his career, including garage rock, punk rock, hard rock, art rock, new wave, jazz, blues, and electronic. Iggy Pop's hits include, "Search and Destroy" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" by the Stooges, and his solo hits "Lust for Life", "The Passenger", and "Real Wild Child." Related Categories The Ramones. Please note that prices increase as editions sell. Michael Crouser writes: ““I find that when I am in the dog runs, I am nearly invisible to my subjects. . . They play like little boys throwing one another down a hill on the school playground. They practice in their play what nature has said they must know. Dominance, defense, breeding and agility. And I am often nearly on top of the dogs in useful obscurity, making the first pictures of my life that actually make me laugh.”” Michael Crouser captures the thrilling intensity of dogs at play in his collection of photographs titled "Dog Run." Crouser catches both rare and provocative moments, —split seconds of intense play that give an intimate glimpse into the expressive personalities of his dynamic subjects. The photos were shot in neighborhood dog runs, where the dramatic action is all about dogs being dogs away from the influence of their masters. The photos spotlight...

SoHo Fire Escapes Manhattan 1984 (Soho Manhattan photograph)
By Fernando Natalici
Located in NEW YORK, NY
SoHo Fire Escapes, New York, 1984 by Fernando Natalici: The simplicity & grace of iconic New York architecture rendered timeless by the snap of the camera. A window into a street photographer's decisive moment. A window into, not only the New York of 'then', but the hidden poetry of urban architecture... Archival Inkjet Print. Approximately 12 x 18 inches (image size: approx 12 x 17in.). Hand signed from an edition of 20. Obtained directly from artist. Excellent condition. New York based photographer Fernando Natalici is best known for his iconographic documentation of the downtown Manhattan art scene of the mid/late 70's and early 80's. Natalici’s portfolio includes sought after images of a young Patti Smith, Blondie, Talking Heads, Keith Haring, The Ramones and more. As an Art Director, Fernando has played a key role in creating memorable visuals for historic NY venues such as CBGB's, The Mudd Club, Area and Danceteria. Soho Building Architecture, A Brief History The SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District comprises about 500 buildings, many of which are characterized by their cast-iron facades. Development of the district began in the late 18th century. The population surged after the War of 1812, and some homes from this era still remain. The latter half of the 19th century saw the district evolve into a center of commerce and entertainment, and the majority of the cast-iron buildings the district is known for were constructed during this period. The use of cast-iron allowed for ornate facades that were a much cheaper alternative to granite and marble. However, an increase of industrial production along with rising crime and “immorality” steadily drove residents out of the area. The district began to decline in the early 20th century, leaving many spaces vacant for decades and leading some to refer to the area as Hell’s Hundred Acres.

It was not until the late 1960s that artists became attracted to the area because the large, unoccupied loft spaces made affordable studios. Many of those who moved into the area lived in their workspaces, even though it was illegal to do so, and the area was not sufficiently equipped for residential life, lacking basic necessities. At the same time, the entire landscape of SoHo was threatened by plans to build the Lower Manhattan Expressway (LOMEX) - a proposed ten-lane elevated highway that would require the demolition of much of SoHo and Little Italy. Artists in the area collaborated with other preservation advocates in the first, unsuccessful attempt to designate SoHo as a historic district for its architectural significance. Although that failed, they also formed Artists Against the Expressway and ultimately helped defeat the plans for LOMEX, which saved the architecture in the area. The “SoHo Effect” has become a model for repurposing an industrial district for mixed use, both commercial and residential, while preserving much of the existing structural integrity. Today SoHo is known for its unique cast-iron architecture, desirable loft living...
