Roy Lichtenstein Leo Castelli gallery 1969 (announcement)
By Roy Lichtenstein
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Roy Lichtenstein, Castelli Graphics, New York, 1969 announcement: A rare, highly collectible 1960s Roy Lichtenstein announcement published on the occasion of: Roy Lichtenstein, 'Rouen Cathedrals and Haystacks', Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, June 7th, 1969. Medium: Folding announcement on smooth wove paper; offset printed; 1969. Dimensions: 9.25 x 6.5 inches (folded closed). Good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Scarce. _ Roy Lichtenstein was an American artist known for his paintings and prints which referenced commercial art and popular culture icons like Mickey Mouse. Composed using Ben-Day dots—the method used by newspapers and comic strips to denote gradients and texture—Lichtenstein’s work mimicked the mechanical technique with his own hand on a much larger scale. He was a leading figure in establishing the Pop Art movement, along with Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns. “I take a cliché and try to organize its forms to make it monumental. The difference is often not great, but it is crucial,” he once said of his work. Born on October 27, 1923 in New York, NY, he studied painting under Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League of New York after graduating from high school. Drafted by the US Army during World War II, while stationed in France, he notably encountered the works of European masters and contemporary artists. After the war, he returned to America and completed his degree at Ohio State University, producing paintings in the vein of Abstract Expressionism. Lichtenstein began teaching art at Rutgers University during the late 1950s, meeting fellow faculty members involved in the New York art scene, including the performance artist Allan Kaprow. By the early 1960s, he had begun showing with Leo Castelli gallery in New York, and made major breakthroughs with works such as Drowning Girl (1963), a satirical take on melodramatic pulp fiction of the era. Themes of irony and cliché prevailed throughout the remainder of Lichtenstein’s career, as evinced in his Haystacks (1969), a take on the canonical series by Claude Monet. The artist died of pneumonia on September 29, 1997 in New York, NY. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Tate Modern in London. Born Brian Donnelly on November 4, 1974 in Jersey City, NJ, KAWS graduated with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and went on to work in animation. “When your whole art is based on the lettering you choose, you kinda figure out what ones work together. I just liked the shapes of the k, a, w, s,” he explained of his moniker. Having started as a graffiti artist in New York in the early 1990s, KAWS began reworking advertisements in his distinctive style. Pop Art and culture permeate his cartoonish Companion series of figurines, which bear a resemblance to the works of Takashi Murakami. Andy Warhol Flowers Bearbrick 400% and 100% (Warhol Be@rbrick)
By Andy Warhol
Located in NEW YORK, NY
(after) Andy Warhol Flowers Bearbrick 400% & 100%: Andy Warhol Flowers art toy trademarked & licensed by the Estate of Andy Warhol. The partnered collectible reveals Warhol's iconic Flowers imagery wrapping the figure in its entirety. Housed in a standout Warhol Flowers collectors' box. Medium: Vinyl Figurine. Set of two figurines. Dimensions of larger piece: 11 x 5 inches. Condition: New in its original packaging. Warhol foundation trademark featured on lower left of reverse. Published by Medicom from a sold out edition of unknown. Further Background: BE@RBRICKs are a form of collectible toy that resemble a cross between LEGO and well, a bear. These block-style figurines boast teddy bear-style heads that have become an integral pillar of the collectible toy scene. In fact, it wouldn’t be so far-fetched to say that it almost single-handedly carved out the fad of toy collecting in modern times, treading the very fine line between toy and art. Since its inception, BE@RBRICKs have become one of the most recognizable characters in the world, and some of the most sought after. Please note exact patterns may vary. Further Background: The idea to paint flowers as the subject of a major series was apparently suggested to Warhol by Henry Geldzahler, then curator at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. To some degree, the pictures belong to a long art historical tradition of still-life painting. "With the Flowers, Andy was just trying a different subject matter. In a funny way, he was kind of repeating the history of art. It was like, now we're doing my Flower period! Like Monet's water lillies, Van Gogh...
