Lotus Number Four (Hard Edge Floral Still Life Painting of Lotus Leaves)
By Frank DePietro
Located in Hudson, NY
30 x 24 x 1 inches oil on canvas Inspired by close observations of the natural world and encounters with still moments that give us pause. Lines, shapes and colors encountered in nature, reveal the cycles of decay and regeneration that are life’s constant state of change. The work has a quiet, meditative quality. The subject is portrayed in a manner true to their existence in a specific time and place and selected based on considerations of visual relationships to formal elements of painting. Aspects of photo realism, hard edge and color field techniques are utilized to isolate the uniqueness of the subject’s detail, as well as emphasize flatness and illusion of depth within the two-dimensional space of the painting. About the artist: Frank DiPietro was born and raised in Scranton PA. He received a Bachelor of Art from Bloomsburg University in 1997, majoring in both Painting and Ceramics with a minor in Art History. In 2000 he earned a degree in Art Education from Moore College of Art and Design while continuing his studies in painting. Frank lived in Philadelphia for twelve years painting and teaching at several museums, art centers and schools in the region. In 2010 he and his family moved to Chester County PA, where he currently resides. Frank currently teaches painting classes and workshops at the Delaware Art Museum and Longwood Gardens...

Charles Henry Miller Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting
By Charles Henry Miller
Located in New York, NY
Charles Henry Miller (American, 1842-1922) Untitled (New York Landscape), c. 1900 Oil on canvas laid on foam 6 1/8 x 10 5/8 in. Signed lower left: C.H.M. Charles Henry Miller was a noted artist and painter of landscapes from Long Island, New York. The American poet Bayard Taylor called him, "The artistic discoverer of the little continent of Long Island." Miller was educated at Mount Washington Collegiate Institute, and graduated in medicine at the New York Homeopathic Institute in 1864. Before his graduation, he had occasionally painted pictures, and in 1860 he exhibited The Challenge Accepted at the National Academy of Design, in New York City. He lived in Queens at the summer estate, Queenslawn, originally purchased by his parents. He went abroad in 1864 and again in 1867, and was a pupil in the Bavarian Royal Academy at Munich under the instruction of Adolf Lier. After the 1874 death of his father, Jacob Miller, who was a wealthy architect and builder, Miller received a large inheritance that allowed him to paint as an independent artist for the remainder of his long life. He worked seriously and exhibited regularly, including at international exhibitions. The majority of his oil paintings depict Long Island subjects, especially those in and around Queens Village. Fed up with the development of the eastern part of Queens (present-day Nassau County), he began to spend part of his summers in East Marion, Long Island, c. 1910. Here he spent his time sketching and painting the surrounding areas. In 1885 he published The Philosophy of Art in America, using the pseudonym Carl De Muldor (he was descended from the De Muldor family). His work was recognized: in 1873, he was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design and an academician in 1875. He served as president of the New York Art Club in 1879 and of the American Committee at the Munich International Exposition in 1883. Legacy and honors • In 1910 Miller founded the Queens Borough Allied Arts & Crafts Society. • A New York City public school, Queens P.S. 33, was once named for him. • 1878, gold medal awarded by the Massachusetts Charitable Association • 1885, gold medal at the World's Exposition in New Orleans. Following is a list, which includes many of his known exhibitions: • National Academy of Design, New York, NY, 1860-61, 1865-67, 1870-1921 • Brooklyn Art Association, Brooklyn, NY, 1872-84, 1891-92 • Artist's Fund Society, New York, NY, 1874 (exhibition & sale), 1886 (exhibition & sale) • Century Association, New York, NY, (1874-1917) • Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, Philadelphia, PA, 1876 (prize) • Society of American Artists, New York, NY, (1878-1882) • Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association, Boston, MA, 1878 (prize) • Paris International Exposition, Paris, France, 1878, 1889 • American Water Color Society Exhibition, New York, NY, 1879 • Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia , PA, 1879-99 • Boston Art Club, Boston, MA, 1880-1907 (prize) • Union League Club, New York, NY, 1880 • Lotos Club, New York, NY, 1880, 1896, 1899-1900, 1906 • Salons of Paris, Paris, France, 1882 • International Exhibition, Munich, Germany, 1883 (president & exhibitor) • New Orleans Exposition, New Orleans, LA, 1885 (prize) • Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, 1888-89, 1891, 1894-98, 1904 • Fifth Avenue Art Gallery, New York, NY, 1889 (exhibition & sale) • World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, IL, 1892 • Frederick A. Busy Blue (Abstract Checkered Pattern Gouache and Collage on Paper)
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Donise English Busy Blue, 2020 14" X 17" gouache and collage on paper This abstract geometric composition on paper features a playful geometric motif that is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The geometric forms are made in a more painterly, gestural manner rather than with a hard edge. Paint is not heavily built up upon the surface but it certainly exhibits a tactile quality which is characteristic of the artist's aesthetic. English's work celebrates the quirky, unexpected qualities of shapes and colors. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Resume: EDUCATION Master of Fine Arts in Painting Bard College 1986 Bachelor of Science in Art History State University College at New Paltz 1977 Additional Study: New York Studio School (Drawing Marathons) Columbia University, School of Architecture Women’s Studio Workshop TEACHING Professor of Studio Art, Department of Art and Art History, Marist College, Poughkeepsie,NY Coordinator, Interior Design Program, Florence, Italy campus 1992-present AWARDS Finalist, “Saatchi Showdown” 2010 Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent, University of Bridgeport, CT 2000 Purchase Prize, “11th National Juried Exhibition” College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore 1999 First Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts ‘95” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, CT 1995 Joseph A. "Turkey Trot, " Will Moses, Rural Folk Art, Autumn Landscape with Pumpkins, Fall
Located in New York, NY
Will Moses (American, b. 1956) Turkey Trot, 2012 Oil on board 8 5/8 x 7 5/8 inches Signed lower right Soft, shadowy foothills dotted with traditional white farmhouses; weathered red barns tilted haphazardly on broad patchwork sweeps of green and hay-gold fields; small clusters of black and white cows grazing placidly in the distance…it's all part of Moses Country. And, the 200 year-old farmhouse, where Will Moses has his studio, is as solidly traditional as the surrounding landscape…the white house where the legendary Grandma Moses began her career. Born and raised here, in Eagle Bridge, New York, Will Moses creates paintings that reflect the quiet beauty of this tiny community nestled close to the Vermont border. Will has created a vivid, delightful miniature world, peopled with villagers who have stepped out of the past to charm us with their simple, everyday pastimes. As a fourth generation member of the renowned Moses family, painting is a natural tradition for Will, who began painting when he was four years old. Encouraged by his grandfather, a well-known folk painter in his own right, young Will was allowed to experiment freely with paints. Forrest K. Moses was totally committed to self-expression and passed this freedom of spirit along to his young grandson. Stimulated by his grandfather's confident approach, Will developed his own unique style of Americana. Today, Will continues to carry on the family tradition. Although his style is reminiscent of that of his celebrated great-grandmother, it is more complex and sophisticated. Basically self-taught, Will has honed his technique to capture all the most minute details in sharp-edged focus. It is a technique that has gained him considerable attention in art circles. Will Moses has had several well acclaimed exhibitions of his work in the United States, Canada and Japan. The Japanese are enthusiastic collectors of Will's art and Will has personally toured Japan with an exhibition of his work there. In North America, Will continues to make appearances at art galleries and folk art shows, meeting friends, collectors and admirers of his work. Recent public exhibitions of Will's work have taken place at the Cahoon Museum of American Art, The Everson Museum, The Bennington Museum, the North Shore Art Gallery and the President Ford and Reagan Libraries. Will continues his work illustrating and writing children's books. Philomel Books/Penguin Books for Young Readers, have now published ten books to date: Silent Night, The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van...
