Large 18th Century Wooden Carving of an Angel with Cherubs
Located in Dallas, TX
This endearing hand carved wooden statue depicts a large central angel, flanked by two winged cherubs. The grouping has been stripped recently, allowing the skill of the carver to be displayed in full. The removal of the original finish also gives additional character to the statue, as the centuries old repairs are now visible, as seen on the leg of the cherub to the angel’s left.
The angel is touching the hand of one cherub and the top of the head of the other as though protecting them. They are standing upon a platform with stylized circular clouds swirling around them. The tall angel wears a robe with tassels draped over his shoulders and tied at his waist. The winged cherubs are shown as full figures, which was often seen in the 18th century, as well as during the Renaissance. In the Baroque period, they were often shown only as winged cherub heads. The piece is of Western European origin, possibly the Netherlands, Belgium, or Germany.
At nearly 4 feet by 4 feet, this statue is of a particularly large size, especially considering it is a figural grouping. The back of the piece is a series of plain, horizontal boards...

Mid-18th Century French Carved Polychrome Statue of Moses in Oak Niche
Located in Dallas, TX
Crafted in France circa 1760 and resting in a carved oak niche, the figure depicts the prophet Moses, the most important prophet in Judaism and Christianity. Moses is best known from the story in the biblical Book of Exodus and Quran as the lawgiver who met God face-to-face on Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments after leading his people, the Hebrews, out of bondage in Egypt and to the "promised land" of Canaan. He is represented with horns on top of his head. The horns came about because of an ambiguity of the Latin version of Exodus 34, 30. After being addressed by God on top of Mount Sinai and given the Tablets of the Law containing the Ten Commandments, Moses descended to his people in the desert. His face was seen to shine with a divine light. (The first Moses with horns was commissioned in 1505 by Pope Julius II for his tomb; it was based on a description in chapter 34 of Exodus in the Vulgate, the Latin translation of the Bible used at that time). The religious and biblical item...

Pair of French 17th Century Angel Candle Holders in Carved Elmwood
Located in Dallas, TX
Standing at over two feet tall, this 17th century pair of angel candlesticks has been carved out of a beautiful French elm wood. Because elm wood typically has an interlocked grain, it can be quite difficult to carve or split. These candlesticks were produced by a master craftsman in France during the 1600s.
Our angels have long, wavy hair that extends past their shoulders. They are wearing long flowing gowns with scalloped collars and half sleeves. The loosely draped robe reaches their ankles, exposing bare feet that stand upon a round base. One leg is also visible from behind the material due to a slit at mid-thigh. Each angel is holding a turned candle holder that has a large wrought iron pricket with a lobed bobeche.
In France, this type of candle holder is known as an Ange Céroféraire. A ceroferary is the acolyte...

circa 1880 French Plaster Sculpture of Francois Rene De Chateaubriand
Located in Dallas, TX
Made in plaster, circa 1880, this interesting French sculpture depicts Francois Rene de Chateaubriand sitting with his legs crossed in an armchair. A rolled scroll is in his right hand, which rests on his thigh and books and scrolls are strewn beneath the chair. Chateaubriand’s long overcoat is unbuttoned and gathered, showing an elegant frock and bowtie ensemble beneath. Beneath the chair is a shaped plinth with cavetto molding on all sides and “Chateaubriand” incised along the front.
Francois Rene de Chateaubriand was born in Saint-Malo, France in 1768, the youngest of 10 children. A noted politician, historian, and author, Chateaubriand had a profound effect on literature, being the first major figure of Romanticism. Chateaubriand was also the original man of letters, a group of French authors that also had burgeoning political careers. A fellow man of letter, Victor Hugo was so inspired by Chateaubriand that he is known for having said “To be Chateaubriand or nothing”. This French plaster sculpture...

Nepalese Gilt Bronze Bodhisattva 'Amoghapasha?', Early to Mid-20th Century
Located in Austin, TX
A beautiful and unusual gilt bronze figure of a Bodhisattva, possibly Amoghapasha, Nepal, early to mid-20th century, circa 1930s or 1940s.
The regal figure possibly depicting the bodhisattva Amoghapasha, the Unfailing Lasso. The enlightened being is portrayed seated upon a high double lotus pedestal. He is dressed as an Indian prince, wearing a luxurious foliate patterned dhoti around his waist and a billowing scarf around his shoulders. . His torso bare save for the jeweled necklaces and the sacred thread. A five pointed crown with an image of Amitabha Buddha in the central point graces his head.
His princely face cold painted with beautiful detail, his hair colored blue with crushed lapis lazuli, indicating his peaceful nature. Amoghapasha holds a lasso in one hand, an axe in the other. He is considered an emanation of Avalokiteshvara. A bodhisattva of compassion, Amoghapasha is so named because of the lasso he holds in his hand. The lasso represents his vast compassion which is thought to extend to encompass all beings, bringing them into a state of perfection and enlightenment.
The copper base plate, seemingly a later replacement, has been inscribed with a visvajra (double vajra...

Nepalese Gilt Bronze Figure of Bodhisattva Chenrezig, Mid-20th Century

A nice vintage early to mid-20th century gilt bronze sculpture of the Buddhist deity Avalokiteshvara in his four armed form, known as Chaturbuhja, or Chenrezig in Tibet.
Chenrezig, a form of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion (known as Guan Yin or Kwan Yin in Chinese), sits in vajrasana upon a high double lotus pedestal. One pair of hands is clasped in prayer at heart level, the other pair of hands raised upwards at shoulder lever and holding discreet attributes, a mala (prayer beads) in one hand, a lotus blossom in the other.
Chenrezig is dressed in an elaborately patterned floral dhoti that covers his lower half. His torso bare, shoulders covered with a shawl and scarves that billow out around him. He is festooned with jewels, necklaces, bracelets, armlets, earrings, belt and a five pointed crown. The earrings studded with coral. The crown studded with turquoise. Pair 19th Century French Bronze Statues by Auguste Moreau '1855-1919'
Located in Dallas, TX
Pair 19th Century French bronze statues by Louis Auguste Moreau (1855-1919) are exemplary examples of the glorification of the simple rural life celebrated by artists in France during the Belle Epoque. A distinctive departure from rendering affluent families and lifestyles as dictated by the many patrons of art over the centuries, this informal movement gave a glimpse into the lives of everyday people. In this example, we have two young maidens, one carrying a bundle over her shoulder and a basket in her left hand, while the other totes a basket over her shoulder and a couple of protesting chickens in her right hand! Each maiden is modestly dressed...
