Rare Large Scale Pastoral Plaster Sculpture from Loriol-du-Comtat, France, 1914
Located in Dallas, TX
Found in a chateau in Loriol du Comtat, in the Provence region of France, this large-scale plaster sculpture is signed and dated by the artist, making it a rare find. Originally part of a boiserie containing a fireplace, the sculpture decorated the main hall of the chateau. The artist, Marius Sain, created the piece for the owners of the chateau in 1914. The lovely depiction of a shepherdess and her flock is a fitting subject for an area of France in which shepherding is such an important part of the culture. The preserved heritage of transhumance in Provence goes back at least 800 years, as evidenced by collections of ancient songs, stories, and art.
Life-size in scale, the lovely sculpture features a mix of high-, mid-, and low-relief embellishments. A hooded shepherdess tends to her flock of sheep with a crook in hand. A dog sits calmly at her feet as the flock gathers in front of them. Both the shepherdess and the dog are in high relief, as is the lead sheep. The lamb seen suckling from the front sheep was crafted in mid relief, as is the visible head on the far right of the sculpture. There are a few sheep behind them in low relief. Large trees can be seen on either side of the group, while off in the background (faintly visible) are a castle with four fastigiate Mediterranean cypress trees (known as Stricta) and a spired church. The attention to detail is magnificent, with textured surfaces including the animals’ fur and the uneven ground.
Block print on the plaster can be seen at the base. The letters read Le Soir, which is French for “The Night”. The right side of the sculpture has been signed “M Sain 1914”.
Marius Joseph Sain was born in 1877 in Avignon, France. In 1902, Sain moved to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Through introductions by his older brother and painter, Paul...

François-Emile Décorchemont French, 1880-1997
François Décorchemont, originally an accomplished painter and potter of recognized ability, turned to the making of glass in 1904. Pâté de verre was the medium in which he excelled and for which he is best known. After studying decorative art in Paris, François Décorchemont returned to his native Conches in 1910 to develop new techniques in stained glass, particularly in the use of crystal to give multicolored and faceted panes. After 1909, while continuing to produce fine glass paste pieces, Francois Decorchemont began to experiment with a new casting technique. François Decorchemont, Emile's son and also an artist, helped out in his father’s studio, in particular helping him to research the possibilities of creating jeweled adornments in pates d'email (enamel pastes) for Gerome's polychrome sculptural creations.
Francois Décorchemont, a potter and painter at the outset of his career, became fascinated with the IDEA of developing and utilizing a thin translucent glass material in his work. It was in essence the revival and an adaptation of a long forgotten Egyptian glass-making process using colored crystal powdered glass, metallic oxides and an adhesive paste. This "new" material, known as pâte de verre was developed around the turn of the century, principally at the Sevres porcelain factory, by a number of artists working there, notably Henri Cros and Albert Dammouse.
The end of the 19th century was an illuminated period in the history of art. Impressionist painting appeared and created an interest in glass as material. Traditional sculpting materials such as bronze and marble made way for glass with its possibilities of light and color. Henry Cros and François Décorchemont became the leaders of French pâte de verre and facilitated the proliferation of this colorful glass. His first major work, in 1934, was inn the Eglise Sainte-Odile near Porte Champerret in Paris, some 300 square meters of brilliant colors. After the war, he devoted his work to churches in the Eure, including of course Beuzeville where, thanks to the generosity of the local council, the church is lit at night so that his work can be admired from outside. During the first half of the 20th century a number of French artists became famous for their work in pâte de verre, and Francois Decorchemont among them. March 2014, 20th Century’s Greatest Art Dealer Felix Marcilhac’s Collection Privee at Sotheby’s - Chang Yi Entrusts Antoine Leperlier in the Bidding of a Francois Decorchemon's Original. It has been reported that Felix Marcilhac’s Collection Privee auction at Sotheby’s brought in 33,125 Euros (28,000 RMB), three times the estimated price. Marcilhac is considered the greatest Art Deco dealer...

Over Life-Size Tibetan Gilt Bronze Arm of a Bodhisattva, Late 19th Century
Located in Austin, TX
An impressive larger than life-size cast and gilt bronze left hand and arm of a bodhisattva, late 19th century or earlier, Tibet.
The over-sized arm and hand of graceful proportions. The arm tapering down to a slender wrist embellished with a simple bracelet hiding the join between the hand and arm. The hand and arm richly gilt. The join to the elbow visible and exposed.
The hand heavily cast, with nice detail to the fingernails and cuticles. The palm with simple incised lines. The hand, with the pointer and pinky fingers raised, and the middle and ring finger folded down touching the thumb, performs the gesture known as karana mudra, the gesture of dispelling evil. (Here in Texas we refer to this gesture as "Hook'em Horns!")
Karana mudra is often associated with Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, known in Tibet as Chenrezig, and in China as Guanyin.
The hand and arm would originally have been part of a much larger sculpture. Unfortunately many Tibetan Buddhist sculptures...

Two French Bronze Figures of Giuliano and Lorenzo De' Medici
Located in Flower Mound, TX
This is a wonderful pair of French bronzes, Lorenzo di' Piero de' Medici also known as Lorenzo the Magnificent, and his younger brother Giuliano. Lorenzo is the larger of the two figures measuring 8.3" in height and 3.7" wide, and 3.4" deep, Giuliano is 8" high and 2.7" wide and 3.2" deep. Both are modelled opposing, seated, and clad in armor. These bronzes are from the 19th century, but from differing parts of the century. The model of Lorenzo is late 19th century, and the quality of the casting is good but not as good as that of Giuliano who would appear to be from the mid part of the 19th century. They make a good companion pair, but did not form part of the same casting run, and have been later paired up. Both have great coloring, with a similar dark brown and green patina.
Provenance: These were part of the Fulwood Collection
The Fulwood Collection comes from a Grade II listed rectory in the North of England. Formerly the childhood home of Sir Douglas Bader. The rectory was acquired by the late owner approximately 15 years ago. The house was formerly split into two separate houses, and with care he lovingly refurbished it back into a single house and refurnished in a blend of the Grand Tour style with Welsh and English provincial tastes. This property contained fine furniture, works of art, paintings, ceramics and other miscellaneous items some of which have been purchased by “The Englishman’s Antiques”

Gandharan Stucco Head of a Bodhisattva, Region of Hadda, 3rd-5th Century
Located in Austin, TX
A striking Gandharan molded stucco head of a male Bodhisattva, tentatively identified as Manjushri, ancient region of Gandhara, probably Hadda or surrounding area, 3rd-5th century.
The Bodhisattva is sculpted of stucco in an idealized manner as a youthful male, with soft and kind features, a benign expression on his face. He wears an elaborate pleated turban wrapped around his head, with two sweeping lobes at the front.
His turban secured on one side by a small image of a roaring lion. The lion may be read as a reference to Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, who is often depicted as riding or subduing a roaring lion, a metaphor for taming the wild thoughts of the mind.
Manjushri gazes outwards in a beatific manner from almond shaped eyes, a gentle smile on his lips. The eyes at different levels when looking at the sculpture head on, indicating the original placement of the head was meant to be viewed at an angle.
Remnants of pigments to the eyes, nose, mouth and ears.
Mounted on a custom black metal stand.
Hadda was an important center of Buddhist learning in the early history of Greco Buddhist Gandhara, and at one time may have housed a bone relic of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni. The sculpture and architecture of Hadda followed Hellenistic artistic conventions faithfully, leading some scholars to believe the distinct Greco Buddhist style of Gandhara was first developed in Hadda before spreading to the rest of the region.
The kingdom of Gandhara was situated at a crossroads of trade and cultures. Being one of the last remnants of Alexander the Great's Empire, the inhabitants of the Greco-Bactrian Buddhist kingdom preserved Greek culture and heritage for centuries after the decline of the Greek Empire...
