Charming Flemish Washed Oak Capital, Two Men Drinking at a Barrel, Circa 1800
About the Item
Most likely originally part of a larger installation or highly carved furniture, this charming oak capital is from Flanders, which is part of modern-day Belgium. Hand-carved circa 1800, the original finish has been washed and the carving was mounted on a painted black stand with a thin metal column. The bleaching has rendered the wood to its natural beige color, allowing the nuances of the carvings to really stand out.
Two men dressed in traditional attire, including a hat and knee-high pants with leggings beneath, are seated at a barrel-like tavern table. Both men are enjoying a beverage, while the gentleman on the right holds a cigarette to his lips. The duo is surrounded by a lush foliate canopy, crowned with a slightly incurved entablature with cavetto molding. A fantastic addition that can be paired with any style of design, our oak capital can be placed on a side table, wall shelf, or mantel.

- Circa 1800 Carved Oak Sculptures of the Apostles, James, John, Peter, and PaulLocated in Dallas, TXHand-carved in oak, circa 1800, these sculptures depict arguably the most important apostles: James, John, Peter, and Paul. All of the figures are distinctly different, although they share some commonalities, such as they are all barefoot and clad in ankle length tunics on a rectangular base with canted corners. The set would make fantastic decorative art for a mantel, shelf, or sofa table. The apostles as they appear in the main photo (from left to right): St. James (20 ¼” H x 7 ½” W x 5 ½” D): sometimes referred to as “James the Great”, he is depicted with long hair and a full beard above a cloak pinned...Category
