Egyptian Revival Bronze and Marble Mantel Clock Egyptian revival mantel clock housed in a polishes black slate and marble stepped case, decorated with winged uraeus and hieroglyphs, surmounted by a patinated bronze sphinx wearing nemes and resting on lions paw feet. Enamel dial with Arabic numerals and original ‘blued’ steel hands. Eight day French movement with anchor escapement striking the hours and halves on a silvered bell. The backplate signed Societe Clusienne S.C.A.P.H. Cluses and numbered 4144. C.1870 Societe Clusienne were based in Cluses near to the Swiss border in France. The case attributed to G.Servant Georges Emile Henri Servant ( 1828-1890) succeeded his father at their foundry at Rue Vieille-du-Temple, Paris in 1855. He specialised in the production of Neo-Egyptian style clocks. He was noted for the high quality of his bronzes at both the Paris Universal Exhibition 1855 and the London Exhibition in 1862. This wonderful clock set, which is comprised of a mantel clock and pair of flanking vases, is designed in a fanciful French ‘Oriental’ style. The set is crafted from brass which has been silvered, parcel gilt and painted. The clock is also mounted with porcelain plaques which are beautifully painted with colourful depictions of birds and flowers. The mantel clock is composed of a tall rectangular body with a break arch top which is crowned by a covered twin-handled urn. The urn features a parcel gilt pointed finial on its cover and a silvered body painted with pink cherry blossoms. The urn stands on the arched top of the clock, which is decorated with a sculptural gilt scrollwork band and a gilt foliate border. The arch contains a circular porcelain dial which features a central painting of a pair of birds, encircled by black Roman Numerals within white cartouches. This dial is framed by a gilt beaded bezel. The shoulders of the clock body are mounted with parcel gilt and silvered elephant heads holding ring handles. Porcelain panels decorate the front and sides of the silvered clock body. These panels are beautifully decorated with paintings of colourful birds, butterflies and cherry blossom trees, set within gilt stiff-leaf frames. The clock body is set on a silvered rectangular base which is edged with a parcel gilt foliate band. The front of the base is mounted with a silvered and parcel gilt lion's head mask and flanking painted porcelain plaques. This white ground vase, painted in reds and blues and ornamented with foliate forms, functions as the clock case, the dial centrally mounted and encompassed by Rococo style gilt bronze motifs. This vase is supported by a gilt bronze base, which is profusely ornamented with gilt bronze acanthus leaves, garlands, and, most distinctly, a pair of putti. This lovely small library clock has a spring-driven eight-day twin chain-fusee movement with going and striking trains. The going train has anchor escapement with a short pendulum and stirrup regulation to facilitate adjusting the timing, which is accessible from the back. The rack striking indicates the hours of a gently sounding bell, which can be repeated at all times by pulling a cord to the side of the case. A miniature French skeleton clock with silk suspension and eight day movement, dating from the mid 19th century, with original glass dome on an ebonised and brass inlayed base with enamel dial. This clock was made by Victor Athanase Pierret whose distinctive VAP mark in an oval is stamped on the base of this clock. He exhibited a small skeleton alarm at the 1851 Great exhibition at Crystal Palace of which this may well be a version. Victor-Athanase Pierret (1806 - 1893) Victor-Athanse Pierret was born 1806 in Bucy-les-Pierrepont. He began his five year apprenticeship with Rolin at the age of 13. Later he moved to Paris and settled in the Rue des Bons-Enfants no. 21 when he was 24. Pierret created pendulum clocks with and without calender indicator, cases for ship’s chronometers, chronometer escapements with temperature compensation and night light clocks with pendulum. At the London Exhibition of 1851 he presented an alarm clock and a pendulum clock with a globe. In 1853 Pierret applied for a patent for a new date indication device, in 1855 he patented an 8-day power reserve movement. Pierret created his own watchmaking tools...
