'The Dealer' original signed color lithograph from the Gambler Series
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'The Dealer' is an original lithograph from John Doyle's 'Gambler' series. The suite included ten different prints, each image capturing the exhilaration and danger of the games of chance played by casino goers. In one of the prints, a woman pulls the lever of a slot machine; in another, men queue before a lottery ticket window. In 'The Dealer,' a man faces the viewer directly. His stern gaze is hidden behind dark glasses as he springs cards between his hands in a flurry of aces and spades. His clothes reflect both the fashion of the 1970s while also hearkening to the villains of Western films. All the while, he is framed from behind by the arch of a blackjack table, which is itself lined by glistening lights of the casino. 29.5 x 20.5 inches, artwork 37.75 x 28.75 inches, frame Signed "doyle" in pencil, lower right Entitled "Dealer" in pencil, lower left Series title "Gamblers" in pencil, lower left Edition "XXXIII/XL" (33/40) in pencil, lower left Publisher blindstamp, lower left Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting, UV Clear glass to inhibit fading, and housed in a maroon-tinted mock tortoise shell finish wood moulding with a gold finish bevel. 'Oval Red Karo Large Vase' original hand-blown glass signed by Ioan Nemtoi
By Ioan Nemtoi
Located in Milwaukee, WI
Ioan Nemtoi's 'Oval Red Karo Large Vase' could easily become a centerpiece of any space or of any collection of glass art. The large oval form of the vase and the bright red color has a commanding presence. In addition, the artist's use of a grid-like pattern in the vase is striking, while regions of green and yellow remind of gestural Abstract Expressionist painting. 22 x 15 x 15 inches Signed 'Nemtoi' along the base Ioan Nemtoi was born in 1964 on a farm in Trusesti near Dorohoi, in North-Eastern Romania, as the eldest son of a large family. "Sun Totem, " haitian pattern god sun totem figurative optical signed by artist
By Prospere Pierre Louis
Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Sun Totem" is an original acrylic painting on canvas signed and dated lower center by the artist Prospere Pierre Louis. It depicts a few contorted human figures in a totem pole arrangement in black and white, a yellow sun with a face in the center, and various brightly colored patterns on the sides. Artwork Size: 62 5/8" x 38 5/8" Frame Size: 73"x 49" Artist Bio: Prospere Pierre-Louis was born in Bainet, in the south of Haiti, on October 12, 1947. As a young boy, he did not go to school but did teach himself to play the drums and the violin. He assisted his father, a houngan (Vodou priest), in preparing Vodou ceremonies. At age 16 he moved to Port-au-Prince where he apprenticed as a barber for a time before working as a waiter at the home of Maude Robard who would in 1973, with the Haitian artist Tiga, organize a community of peasant artists, singers, dancers, craftspeople, actors and painters into a movement that was named Saint Soleil. Prosper followed his friend Maude to the community at Soisson-la-Montagne on the mountain above Laboule and eventually became the most prominent painter in the group. The Saint Soleil movement gained international recognition in 1975 when the French cultural icon Andre Malraux visited the community. It is said that Malraux was seated in a chair on a grassy knoll while the artists of Saint Soleil ascended the slope, encircling him, each holding a piece of their art. Malraux was blown away by the scene and immortalized the movement by featuring Saint Soleil prominently in his last book, " L'Intemporel." Saint Soleil disbanded after only a few years but five of the artists, Prosper Pierre-Louis, Levoy Exil...

'Sunbathing' original stone Shona sculpture by Washington Msonza
By Washington Msonza
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Sunbathing' is an original stone sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist Washington Msonza. In the sculpture, a woman reclines nude and on the ground in a moment of relaxation under the sun. She holds a child on her lap and he two gaze at one another in a moment of bonding and adoration. This intimate composition reminds, on one hand, of the great painting 'Olympia' by the relist painter Édouard Manet by nature of the nude woman in repose. On the other, it also recalls the subject matter of the Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt, whose work often focused on domestic scenes of mothers and their children. All of these art historical references are nonetheless contained within the materiality of the serpentine stone itself, in which Msonza uses the polish and texture of the stone to capture skin and hair and the subtly of the figures' expressions. opal stone (serpentine) 26.5 x 36.5 x 12 inches 200+ lbs not singed Overall good condition; some minor surface abrasions. Sculpture may require preparation to be mounted or installed. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have. Washington Msonza was born in 1966 in Domboshava where he attended primary school. He then moved to Chitungwiza to attend secondary schooling. While in school, he spent most of his time watching his sculptor brother-in-law Albert Mamvura, whose workshop was close to his house. In 1988 Msonza began assisting Albert full time, while simultaneously gaining experience by watching other well known artists in the area including Gedion Nyanhongo...

"Don't Wine, " Original Surreal Serigraph by Paula Schuette Kraemer & Bill Weege
By Paula Schuette Kraemer
Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Don't Wine" is a mixed media piece, predominately a serigraph, by Paula Schuette Kramer and Bill Weege. Both artists signed in pencil in the lower right, and the title is in the lower left. It is one of a an edition of 50. The print is an explosion of bright colors, but red, blue, and green dominated the composition as they fade through the background. A blue figure climbs up a ladder out of an apple, hefting a large wine bottle overhead, which they pour out into the sea of wine. A man, woman, and long-necked orange bird also look out from the apple, reading for the stem of a floating bunch of green grapes. A group surrounds the grapes with their heads and shoulders above the water, eating the fruit. Birds fly through the background, dodging wine glasses and a vase of flowers that seem to be tumbling from a flying carpet. The entire image feels very surreal. "Le Bouquet tout fait (The Ready-made Bouquet), " Lithograph after Rene Magritte
By René Magritte
Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Le Bouquet tout fait (The Ready-made Bouquet)" is a color lithograph after a 1954 original painting by Rene Magritte. A bourgeois "little man" faces away from the viewer looking towards a fall forest. Flora, the goddess of flowers and season of spring, from Sandro Botticelli's "Primavera" is painted on the back of the man. This juxtaposes fall and spring. Art: 12 x 9.75 in Frame: 22.38 x 20.38 in René-François-Ghislain Magritte was born November 21, 1898, in Lessines, Belgium and died on August 15, 1967 in Brussels. He is one of the most important surrealist artists. Through his art, Magritte creates humor and mystery with juxtapositions and shocking irregularities. Some of his hallmark motifs include the bourgeois “little man,” bowler hats, apples, hidden faces, and contradictory texts. René Magritte’s father was a tailor and his mother was a miller. Tragedy struck Magritte’s life when his mother committed suicide when he was only fourteen. Magritte and his two brothers were thereafter raised by their grandmother. Magritte studied at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts from 1916 to 1918. After graduating he worked as a wallpaper designer and in advertisement. It was during this period that he married Georgette Berger, whom he had known since they were teenagers. In 1926, René Magritte signed a contract with the Brussels Art Gallery, which allowed him to quit his other jobs and focus completely on creating art. A year later he had his first solo show at the Galerie la Centaurie in Brussels. At this show Magritte exhibited what is today thought of as his first surrealist piece, The Lost Jockey, painted in 1926. In this work a jockey and his steed run across a theater stage, curtains parted on either side. Throughout the scene, there are trees with trunks shaped somewhat like chess pawns with musical scores running vertically up their sides and branches sticking out from all angles. Critics did not enjoy this style of art; it was new, different, and took critical thought to understand, but The Lost Jockey was only the first of many surrealist artworks Magritte would paint. Because of the bad press in Brussels, René and Georgette moved to Paris in 1927, with the hope that this center of avant-garde art would bring him success and recognition. In Paris, he was able to become friends with many other surrealists, including André Breton and Paul Éluard. They were able to learn from and inspire one another, pushing the Surrealist movement further forward. It was also in Paris that Magritte decided to add text to some of his pieces, which was one of the elements that made his artwork stand out. In 1929, he painted one of his most famous oil works: The Treachery of Images. This is the eye-catching piece centered on a pipe. Below the pipe is written “Ceci n’est pas un pipe,” which translates to “This is not a pipe.” This simple sentence upset many critics of the time, for of course it was a pipe. Magritte replied that it was not a pipe, but a representation of a pipe. One could not use this oil on canvas as a pipe, to fill it with tobacco and smoke it. Thus, it was not a pipe. In 1930, Magritte and Georgette moved back to Brussels. Though they would travel to his exhibitions elsewhere, their home going forward would always be in Brussels. Magritte had his first American exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City in 1936 and his first show in England two years later in 1938 at The London...

'Elephant' original African Shona stone sculpture Zimbabwe
Located in Milwaukee, WI
This small and intimate sculpture of an elephant is a heartfelt and doting example of the sculpture of the Shona artists of Zimbabwe, but also demonstrates the clever use of the texture of the stone. The sculpture is stylized, though more naturalistic than many of the sculptures of the Shona artists. The elephant leans backward and reaches its trunk into the air. The use of texture on its body is ingenious, using a series of crossing lines to create a rough surface that mimics the appearance of real elephant skin, adding a lifelike effect to the stationary stone. Unknown Shona artist 'Elephant,' late 20th century springstone 4.5 x 3.87 x 1.63 inches Overall excellent condition; some minor surface abrasions Shona artists and crafts people have been working in different media for generations. These include paintings, pottery, basket ware, wood carvings, and sculpture done in metal as well as the stone carvings. While there is not a long standing tradition of sculpture in what is now Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia), stone carvings dating from the 15th century were seen in Great Zimbabwe, an excavated temple near Bulawayo. Most of the artifacts from this location have been moved to museums in Cape Town, South Africa or London. It is generally agreed that Zimbabwean stone sculpture...

'Untitled' original 1960s signed serigraph silver abstract vintage train pop art
Located in Milwaukee, WI
In this untitled serigraph, Vincent DiMattio combines the aesthetics of the space age with Pop Art sensibilities and techniques. In the postwar era of the 1950s and 1960s, the United States was in the midst of a period of economic growth for the middle class, and so the trappings and imagery of middle class life became the subjects of a number of artists. While figures like Andy Warhol focused on images of celebrities and soup cans, here DiMattio looks to robots and rockets. At the far left, a figure appears with a round green head and a small clamping arm. To the right, a form like a tank with phallic protrusions, one with a head like the form of a space ship. These signs all alight with the space age toys...

"Victoria" original lithograph signed by Malvin Marr "Zsissly" Albright
By Malvin Marr Albright
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present print, "Victoria," is the most iconic example of the printmaking of Malvin Marr Albright, called Zsissly. The composition for the image comes from Albright's painting from about 1935, done while he was studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. We can see clearly in the image how he possesses the same skill for unsettling, magic realist images as his more famous twin brother Ivan Le Lorraine: The lady Victoria sits at a dining room table, surrounded by luxurious still-life objects. All the textures and surfaces of the image express a horror vacui as seen in his painted works, such as "The Trail of Time is Dust" at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. The door in this print recalls one of the more famous works by his brother, "That Which I Should Have Done I Did Not Do (The Door)" at the Art Institute of Chicago. 1947, after ca. 1935 original painting 8 1/2 x 13 inches, image 12 x 16 inches, sheet 16 1/4 x 20 1/2 frame Signed in pencil, lower right Title in pencil, lower left Published by Associated American Artists Inc. 'Grandmother' original signed Shona stone sculpture by Colleen Madamombe
By Colleen Madamombe
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Grandmother' is an original black serpentine sculpture by the celebrated second generation Shona artist Colleen Madamombe. The sculpture presents a character common to Madamombe's work: a woman with a round face and wearing a billowing, layered dress. Here, a woman leans on her cane, suggesting her old age. The imagery reminds of Madamombe's larger themes of womanhood, sisterhood, and matrilineage. As is so desired of her work, this sculpture is a play in texture: their faces and hands are polished and smooth, which is juxtaposed with the rough-hewn surfaces of the clothing and hair. black serpentine 28 x 15 x 10 inches Signed along the base on the reverse Acquired directly from the artist (C-51) Excellent condition with no chips or signs of wear Colleen Madamombe (1964–2009) was born in Harare, Zimbabwe. The present illuminated folio page contains a fine miniature depicting three figures hunting while on horseback, an image meant to accompany a historic epic. During the medieval period, hunting was an important pastime of male nobility throughout the Islamic world. The Quran itself explicitly endorses hunting and the use of animals to aid in capturing prey: "Lawful to you are foodstuffs that are good to eat and any game that, at your wish, is captured by beasts of prey which train as you do dogs, according to the method that Allah has taught you, after you have spoken the name of Allah over it." (Q 6:4) Muslim princes and nobles enjoyed the chase of the prey via horseback, using bow and arrow, crossbows, and blowpipes to capture their prey Horseback riding itself trained young men in the necessary skills for armed combat and warfare, developing their speed and strength. 12 x 8.25 inches, artwork 19.75 x 15.88 inches, frame accompanied on the back with an image of the verso framed to conservation standards with a 100% rag silk-lined mat in a gold gilded frame A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are much the best-known form of Persian painting in the West, and many of the most important examples are in Western, or Turkish, museums. Miniature painting became a significant genre in Persian art in the 13th century, receiving Chinese influence after the Mongol conquests, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tradition continued, under some Western influence, after this, and has many modern exponents. The Persian miniature was the dominant influence on other Islamic miniature traditions, principally the Ottoman miniature...
