Miami Crypto Man With Coconut Palms by the Pool mixed media wisconsin artist
By David Barnett
Located in Milwaukee, WI
This is a mixed media collage created by the gallery's own Director/Founder! Elements involved are archival inkjet prints, Dr. Ph. Martin's acrylics, and iridescent acrylic on white woven paper. All are mounted to rag mat board. David Barnett's Miami Crypto Man series of 2001 bridges the personal memory of the artist and art history. The figure's jacket has the look of textiles, but the work is a mixed media collage. An homage to the Surrealists, particularly Rene Magritte, the work uses the medium of collage employed by the Dadaists and Surrealists to create the effect of defamiliarization. The work consists of a figure wearing a patterned blue jacket with a sand dollar head and images of a Florida resort...

Haitian Voodoo Beaded Flag with Danbala, Signed 'Moreau'
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present work is an excellent example of the flags and banners of Haitian Voodoo practice. It is constructed of cloth with hand-stitched glass beads and sequins, representing Danbala (also Damballa and Damballah, spelled on the flag "DAMBALAH"). Danbala depicts the spirit or loa of life. In Vodun practice, Danbala Wedo, along with his wife Ayida Wedo, are representative of birth and creation. They are in essence the divine mother and father of the universe. In the iconography, they are usually depicted together as two serpents, or sometimes as a serpent and a rainbow. The snake is symbolic of power, knowledge, and wisdom. Danbala is an especially popular deity and is often represented alone as St. Patrick or Moses, as both of these Christian figures performed miracles associated with snakes. This vévé shows the typical image of two snakes intertwined on a pole, accompanied by two flags. The imagery of Haitian Voodoo culture is derived from multiple sources, and the culture seems to have the ability to integrate the various sources from popular culture to catholic imagery into traditional African symbols, values and rituals. Flags like this one are meant to honor or invoke gods, as well as depict likenesses or attributes using dazzling displays of color. The relatively young age of this example shows the power and influence the imagery continues to have in Haiti to this day. 11 x 13.5 inches, artwork 19 x 21.5 inches, frame Framed to conservation standards in a shadow-box using 100 percent rag matting and museum glass within a gold gilt frame. Haitian Voodoo Beaded Flag with Gran Bwa signed "Claude"
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present work is an excellent example of the flags and banners of Haitian Vodun practice. It is constructed of cloth with hand-stitched glass beads and sequins, representing the figure Gran Bwa (also Grand Bois, spelled on the flag "GRAИD BOI"). According to Patrick Arthur Polk, Vodun flags are meant to honor or invoke gods, as well as to depict their likenesses and attributes with dazzling displays of color. In addition, the beadwork may reference the African religious elements of Vodun which came to Haiti with African slaves. Haiti is an important part of the African diaspora and there is no other Caribbean nation that has such rich survivals of African-style music and dancing, and of religious beliefs and practices that relate to ancient African tradition. According to Polk, Gran Bwa, "ruler of the forest, is the master of herbal remedies. He also presides over initiations which require, at least symbolically, the secrecy of the forest’s darkest recesses. He normally appears as a tall, symmetrical figure that is half man and half tree." The imagery of Haitian Voodoo culture is derived from multiple sources, and the culture seems to have the ability to integrate the various sources from popular culture to Catholic imagery into traditional African symbols, values and rituals. Images like that of Gran Bwa are based off ritual drawings, or vévé, used to invoke the deity and to consecrate ritual space. Such vévé in Voodoo, unlike images appropriated from Catholicism or from popular culture, are probably based off of ground drawings from Central and West Africa. The relatively young age of this example shows the power and influence the imagery continues to have in Haiti to this day. 16.5 x 19.25 inches, artwork 24.25 x 27 inches, frame Polk, Patrick Arthur. Haitian Vodou Flags...

Persian Illuminated Miniature with Two Figures Hunting in a Landscape
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present illuminated page was once part of a larger manuscript, as evidenced by the tears along the right edge, illustrating a story from the Islamic world. The scene presents two figures in a landscape, one on horseback and another gesturing to a fallen deer. The stylization of the landscape shows influence from the Byzantine tradition of painting, with jagged rocks jutting into a golden sky. The page contains handwritten text on both sides, and is surrounded by gold illustrations of peacocks and a running deer. 11 x 6.5 inches, artwork 18.63 x 14 inches, frame accompanied on the back with an image of the verso framed to conservation standards with a 100% rag silk-lined mat in a gold gilded frame A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are much the best-known form of Persian painting in the West, and many of the most important examples are in Western, or Turkish, museums. Miniature painting became a significant genre in Persian art in the 13th century, receiving Chinese influence after the Mongol conquests, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tradition continued, under some Western influence, after this, and has many modern exponents. The Persian miniature was the dominant influence on other Islamic miniature traditions, principally the Ottoman miniature...

Persian Illuminated Miniature with Four Figures Playing Polo in a Landscape
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present illuminated folio page contains a fine miniature depicting four figures playing polo. Polo, also called 'chagun,' was the sport of kings and princes of central Asia and Iran, and the sport probably originated there in the 6th century BCE. Polo matches appear in a large number of early Persian texts, including in the writings of the 10th century epic writer Abu l-Qasim al-Firdawsi: He describes numerous polo matches in his famous 'Shahnameh' (The Persian Book of Kings). This particular illumination also is closely related to an example held at the Smithsonian Museum of Asian Art: a folio from 'Guy u Chawgan' (The ball and the polo-mallet) which shows a polo game with the dervish and the shah. 12 x 8.25 inches, artwork 19.75 x 15.88 inches, frame accompanied on the back with an image of the verso framed to conservation standards with a 100% rag silk-lined mat in a gold gilded frame A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. 'Cartouche 1-16' Mixed Media, Signed & Dated by Artist
By John Baughman
Located in Milwaukee, WI
Mixed Media, signed & dated lower margin. Art: 36"x 12 1/2" Frame: 45 1/2"x 21 1/2" BORN 1947 - GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN His mother always thought he was just a little bit of a rebel. And not just because he mixed his paints and painted out of the lines on his paint-by-number pictures. To this day, John Baughman marches to his own drummer, which is apparent when viewing his multi-media artwork. That is also part of his charm. Growing up in rural Western Michigan, John was the oldest of five children. There were no artists in his family, but he was interested in drawing at a very young age; he differed from most young artists in that he wanted to be experimental rather than ordinary. A kind, neighbor lady, Paula Larson, who was a Director of Art, encouraged John to keep his interest in art by always leaving artistic materials on her kitchen table. They were open to him whenever he pleased. John's father was an executive for GM and hoped his son would grow up to be an engineer. John loved...
